Hey Guys,
I've been kicking around the idea of selling my car, and getting an M3 instead. I have an E92 335xi with 20k miles on it, and have the following modifications done:

-Dinan: Stage 3 software, intake, oil cooler, exhaust
-KW v3 coilovers
-19x8.5 19x9.5 Linea Corse wheels

I know that mods generally are not worth anything when selling the car. However, I'm wondering since I still have 30k left on the warranty, and since Dinan covers the warranty, if I may be able to actually get some of my money back. I know that if I wait until warranty is expired, I'm not getting crap extra back.

So, in this situation, what percentage of the modification value (if any), do you guys think I could attempt to add the the private party KBB sale price? I'd have to tally receipts, but I've probably spent 12-15k on mods.

And I guess a related question (but maybe better for the M3 forum), would be if the coilovers and wheels are compatible with M3's?

Probably depends on how long to want to wait with it on the market. To get anything extra, first the buyer has to know who the hell Dinan is, like their stuff, and want a previously modded car to begin with. Then, he's gonna discount the add-on price the same way you discount the new price of the car.

I'd figure a small percentage, if any, unless you find the neighborhood Dinan freek in a buying mood.

If I had your car, I'd maybe advertise it in Roundel and on specialty sites (like this one, maybe). Much better chance of it appealing to somebody who frequents those places than on Craigslist.

"Uh, what's Dinan?" I suspect you may get tired of hearing that question before you are done!

Yeah that could be true. I may be able to get more money out of selling the pieces individually. Obviously I can't sell the software, and the oil cooler would be too costly in labor just to take out, but everything else I should be able to sell...

as for selling the car and getting some money back; I believe you have enough Dinan products to get the Dinan badge and be classified as a Dinan 335i. When you tell buyers that your car is special and that you have the badge and the warranty is still intact, they might be more willing to pay more for yours.

Just compare it to a Saleen Mustang... aftermarket mods... yes.... worth more.... definitely

Traded both of my Dinan-modded E46s and was given more on my trade because they recognized the added value of the Dinan mods. I wouldn't say I got the full price for them, but there was a significant bump over what they'd have given me without them.

+1 you need to find someone that appreciates the mods. Personally, if I see any performance mods I would think they beat the crap out of the car.

Short answer in no, the question is does it reduce value? I think it does.

I think I'm going to go test drive an M3 this weekend to see if this is something I really want to pull the trigger on. The dealer I'm going to is a Dinan vendor, so I'll ask them if I can get anything else for trade in. I'm pretty sure selling private party will get me more money though.

Regarding the intake, you guys can definitely expect to see it in the classifieds if it doesn't look like I can get anything extra selling it with the vehicle. I'm starting to think parting out is probably the way to go anyways...

you can sell everything but the software. it is better for you to part out the car. no one will pay the extra money for the mods when the car value is cheaper. it would help you sell the car more if it was stock, this way you have a bigger audience.

I wouldn't buy a car with any evidence of mods. No exceptions. Mods suggest to me that the car was owned by an under-30 male-- the last demographic I would choose to buy a car from.

How something was taken care of is very important to me, because you only typically find the evidence after you've owned things for a while.

When I buy stuff, I look first for things owned by a retiree. They have time to keep things in tip-top shape. Next an older woman, then an older man, then a young woman, and last a young male.

I'd imagine there are other people like myself. So count on those buyers being eliminated, your market being other young males-- also typically price-sensitive.

Sell anything you can and do your best to look OEM.
