We have two different actions which can instigate a change down. Our typical kick-down command and...

If the accelerator pedal is depressed rapidly, the shift program is changed accordingly. This is achieved by the detected accelerator-pedal value being compared with threshold values in the EGS control unit.
So yes you can get a change down by the speed of pedal movement.

And that aspect for me is why I had to ditch it.

I have a special type of 'automatic' 'box.....

....which is so intuiitive it changes gear BEFORE I intend to make a manouvre.

It knows everything I want to do before I do it and never ends up in the wrong gear.

It acts like it has a brain and it never changes gear when I don't expect it to.

Its much lighter and it doesn't cost £1500

.......I think its called a 'manual'

In DS stick possition, and in manual, I've never experienced this.

Will test tonight

I've had many of those 'autos' as well. But strange thing, I've sat as passenger in some same equipped models and the box adaption has been so jerky, poorly timed changes (usually worse in sport mode) and even known to cause regular stalling of the engine.

Mine seemed very sensitive but others I've driven are similar. If I'm in M3 then bloody-well stay in third, there's more than enough power. You wouldn't dream of dropping to second in a conventional manual and even if you wanted to you can use the paddles. That's why, imho, the automatic is totally shite.

Why can't they just program it like Alpina where (in manual mode) is stays in the bloody gear you select, just like, erm... a manual.

(subject to not over-revving / stalling)

Hateful thing.
PLUS ONE....

"manual" mode...on an auto gearbox....pure crap!...

The car still dictates what is the "optimum" gear to be in...fuck that...if i wana hit the rev limiter, thats my choice!...in "manual" mode the car shouldn't decide!....the driver should! ...

the "manual" mode, is just some fancy paddle gear change bullocks. Allowing the driver to change gear within parameters dictated by the car...

anyways, for real control....its Manual gearbox all the way for me!...

Tested..... Stuck it in DS, used the paddels to get into manual mode, stuck it in third and hit to accelerator as quick as I could without hitting kick down and it stayed in 3rd.

Perhaps pre LCI is different?

Mine has a terrible problem where the box forgets to change back to first when stopped and then tries to pull away in third or worse.

Needs a reset I think....

In D, mine never starts in 1st, always second (as far as I can tell). Makes it much smoother.

DS starts in 1st though.

Regular exercise is the best way to avoid a dodgy knee.
