m4/m5 New gantry speed cameras

I was driving down the m5 today and saw a few flash on the opposite side of the road but as i drove past i quickly looked back to see what the speed limit was set to and it wasent set at all the display was turned off.

My question is when the displays are turned off is the camera still live? and set to 70mph?

Or does it just do warning flashes?

My understanding was there had to be a speed limit displayed in a red circle on the display for the camera to be active?

Any ideas

Alot of what people say is "here say", if I know theres a camera about id rather not chance it, ive heard the same thing as you about the cameras on the m25 but I tend to slow down in that stretch

I've definitely seen them flash on the M1 section north of the M25 without any speed limit been displayed....same for the section of the M1 north of Leicester. Personally i don't think its not worth the risk, just stick on your cruise control and take it easy....Or your could volunteer to do a test run, and see how many points you pick up through them

It seems certain forces are using the gantries to enforce the NSL on motorways, a cash cow of course.

ACPO limit guidelines are +10% plus 2mph, so a GPS 77mph.

With BMW Speedo errors, you can easy do a steady 80 on the clock and be ok, not so bad.

Yep when the gantry sign is switched off the camera is still active I was on a speed awareness course 2 weeks ago and there were 2 people who had been caught on the 62, like stringy says catches loads of people,
Another thing that's happening in round by us is all the 40 limits are getting reduced to 30,

Ah ok that's good to know.
Really need to just drive on cruise these days so you don't accidently speed!

The E63 has cruise like normal, but press the stalk and it changes into a speed limiter instead, flick up or down to vary the set limit.

This is great to just set at 80 on the mway (or 35 in town, 55 on average zones etc) and then you can relax knowing you can't speed by accident.

This is something others have been doing for years, even Peugeot, not sure why E9x doesn't have it?
