335i Production News

I recently learned that some of the US 335i sedan production will be shifted to South Africa beginning in February. SA Model Code = 0880, Germany = 0842.

I hope this won't scare some would-be owners away, as the Rosslyn plant in SA is pretty capable of producing fine cars.

I would assume this is because of the 1-Series Coupe & Convertible being produced at Leipzip?

My MY08 335i sedan was a leipzig. I was surprised here as we picked up in Munich right across the street from the Munich plant!

Are 335i sedans only being produced in leipzip now?

I don't believe so, there are other plants, such as Regensburg

To me, this sounds very bad .. I mean one of the X factors, the primary reasons of me drive a bimmer is to have a car "Made in Germany" not by some cheaper labour in southern Africa. It's just the part of corporation's another cost saving plan .. good that they don't save by cuttin edges on the car itself like Merc but rather on labour. But then again, it seems reasonable for Americans to get somewhat let down cars when u think about how much they pay for their cars compared to other countries .. I just hope SA made 335i's are not comin to Canada .. i mean it simply wouldn't be fair for Canadians to pay so high price and yet get same cars as US ..
Does anyone know for sure whether Canada gets SA cars or not ?

p.s. - plz don't mock me by sayin SA cars hav good QC and all that because im not talkin about quality issue here, it's about the way it feels to the driver .. sure if u dont get bothered then i certainly wouldnt argue with u ..

Does anyone know if Canada is getting cars mfr'd. in SA now or in recent memory?

If so, then the answer will be yes on this too.

Manufacturing locations are not selectable by the buyer; when you order a car, BMW's logistics will determine the location your car is made based on a variety of factors.

I heard that the plant in South Africa is on the German embassy, so technically these cars ARE made in Germany...

Not completely true. Within the US it depends solely on your BMW Center. A Center can clearly tell where each 3-Series sedan (328/335) will be built, South Africa or Germany (which specific plant in AG is unknown until the VIN is issued) by 1. The model code (SA 328 = 0845, SA 335 = 0880, AG 328 = 0844, 335 = 0842) and 2. by SA listed within the DCS, next to or below the model designation (328/335). If a customer is ordering the vehicle (Priority 1) the Center/Client Advisor has the choice to advise the customer as to where the vehicle will be built (SA vs AG). Some customers simply do not care while others do. It is fairly easy to detect which ones will care.

Ja, you can see WHERE it will be built but you can't change where it will be built. That is what my point was.

Isn't it more like most customers are not really aware of this whole manufacture thing .. i bet u majority of bimmer buyers don't even realize there is a bmw plant in SA except some enthusiasts like us ..

As I mentioned in another thread, I wonder if this one of the ways that BMW has decided to deal with the $ vs EURO depreciation.

So to be safe, just do ED.

+1! Thanks for pointing this out. When I placed the order for my car, I specifically asked the sales manager at the Center to make sure my car was built in Germany and he was able to do so without any issues/problems.

All 3 series coupes are built in Rosenberg since the e46 - maybe longer. 3er sedans have been built in many locations. This change just means the 335 sedan will now be built in the other locations as well. Your e92 will be built in Rosenberg.
