Winter tyres - Are they really worth it?

Sorry for another winter tyre thread, my own indecision has so far steered me away from them.

There are numerous posts on here of people saying how great they are etc but has anyone got them and not been very impressed?

I called into my local small tyre fitters today and the owner basically told me that they don't really make that much difference on a RWD vehicle. I was a bit surprised because he was turning away business and a bit miffed after all the great things I'd read.

Last year I could not even reverse the car to my drive due to the slight incline of the pavement from the road was too great ,

Today its at totally different story with my winter tyres on, I was driving up a hill in the snow and behind me was a big articulated lorry he could not manage driving up the hill and got stuck half way up plus there where two two cars in front of me which gave up and turned back where I just kept on going, no skidding etc. a non-event.

My wife has been skidding all over the place in her Audi A3. In the past in bad weather we used to go out in the A3 it’s a different story now.

They make a big difference compared to summer tyres but are not infallible. I could not get moving this morning in deep snow and put snow socks on the rears which got the car moving straight away.

Yep, with winters, drive on a slope and the snow was too deep to get moving with the winters. Put the snow socks on and drove off, left a great trail behind!!

I took my car out for a test drive on ice today. I've never driven on ice before. Very little traction. Infact if I had to drive on ice for any significant distace, I wouldn't go.

What are winter tyres like on ice? They are not a magic solution I assume?

Asuming that you have 2 complete sets of tyres. How practical is it to fit the 4 winter wheels in the boot/car to drive to a tyre fitter in one journey?

I had no problem at all with my summers in the back after getting my winters fitted. They even wrapped them in plastic for me.

2 in the boot, 2 on the back seat.

Best bet is to get a spare set of wheels and then you can chageover whenever you want.

Thanks for the opinions, I have decided to bite the bullet, keep the car a couple of years and invest in a set of wheels and winters.

I'm already fed up of the will I/wont I be able to get to work etc

On the same subject but will taking off the staggered wheels and putting on 8J all round require any additional stuff (I've seen people mention spacers etc) and will it make a difference putting tyres with a profile of 40 on the rear (ie 225/40/18) as the current rear tyre profile is 35?

Thanks again
