Cooling, intake and ventilation

This is something I've been thinking about for a bit. We need to do whatever we can too help the engine breathe and cool the motor. This should be a definitive list of what we need to do to create a reliable track car or hard driver.

Here 's the best breathing 335 parts list. Please update the list with suggestions. Include methods of bringing in and venting air, i.e.: vented hood or air inlet modifications as ambient, hot air, in the engine compartment may be a contributor to the overheating.

We are looking for best of breed so if you have knowledge of one thing is better than another please spout off.

*I have installed or am getting soon

Intake
  1. Cold Air Intake, What is the best brand and model? (Please list with any #s and impressions):
    • Dinan
    • AFE
    • mr5
    • Injun
    • Dropin filter*
  2. Intercooler
    • Other Intercoolers. Please list with performance #s and impressions
    • HPFS
    • Code 3*
Cooling
  1. Oil Coolers
    • AR*
    • Evolution Racewerks: Tests on their race car running 16-17psi show maximum oil temps of 260 under heavy use. Yet to be released but looking for consumer availability in the next 3 months.
    • BRracing, HKS are all working on solutions. We will list the outcomes when they are introduced
    • VK is not listed as they are having company issues
  2. Performance radiator
    • BMW Performance radiator - This is part of the BMW performance power kit. don't know how to buy or install it as a separate component form the whole kit.
    • HP - to be introduced *
    • AR - please list performance #s and impressions
    • I currently have a new BMW radiator but am looking to replace when some specific #s come back from AR on their performance or HP introduces one for an automatic.
Exhaust
  1. Borla exhaust *
  2. cat delete *
  3. down pipes?
Ambient air, I can't put an M-Tech bumper on as it's too low for where I live :-(.
  1. Vorsteiner vented hood
  2. M-Tech bumper
  3. Increase air flow into engine compartment?
  4. BMW ducting -
    • doubles the ventilation to the OC and anything you might have in the left fender well
    • deletes the fog light
    • only fits in M-Tech bumper
    • have a look to this thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...24#post7778324
      • Partnumbers and pricing of Tischer:
      • 51118050585 and 51118050586, front air outlet covers, 22.57 each
      • 51748050583 and 51748050584, left and right air ducts, 48.94 each
  5. modified ducting to help increase ventilation in the lower, rear of the engine (please expand on this)

Maybe old-age is getting to me...

I can't remember who it was that said to me that the problem with the N54 was the long 6 cylinder format and that it was impossible to supply adequate cooling to the last 2 cylinders via the traditional cooling method. My vague recollection was that it was an engine builder familiar with forced induction. I'd almost want to say it was Steve Dinan but that wouldn't sound right, if I got that information from him I'd remember.

I also remember something that he said about a couple of cooling duct redirecting air into the last two cylinders would go a very long way to solve the heat related engine problems on the N54.

Now it's going to drive me NUTS trying to remember who told me that.

OK Hack and Marcel. I can't believe I didn't list the radiator...DOH!

Hack, Reading a prev. post of your was part of my motivation in starting this post and I really wanna know more about how to use the considerable side grills on our cars for increase air flow. Maybe into the compartment in general or more directed at the back of the engine.

If you look at the underside of the E46 M3 and the MZ4 Coupe, they actually have ducts cut into the reinforcement plate underneath the car to allow some air to flow up into the bottom of the engine compartment and then flow out the back of the ducts. The MZ4 Coupe also has a special little plate with multiple ducts cut into it to redirect air to the TRANSMISSION. On M cars they take the extra care to remove excess heat built-up natural in a very long block. You can see all the same "tricks" done on Porsches (the flat 6 with its compact package needs access to a lot of cool air) and if my boss EVER takes his F430 to work, I can almost guarantee that there's ample air duct directing cool air into the engine compartment too...Although the V8 block is inherently cooler.

Remove the plastic engine cover! It's there to look good and deaden the sound from clattering valves. There's insulation (sound and heat!) underneath the plastic cover.

So can a solution like the one Hack is talking about be made in the aftermarket? Sounds promising.

kenneth, isn't there a bunch of stuff under there that shouldn't be exposed?

Thanks zsapphire7, I have an AR OC. but I think we should also list the most effective solutions. Super curious about the Evolution and HKS OCs

Wow. This died? I would say, besides learning how to drive, this is the most important aspect of making our cars track-reliable.

C'mon folks: Hack, Harold, Mr5, Andrew from AR...I can see you and I know you have something to say.

Thanks zsapphire,

Do you have details on them: temps experienced by them, layout and installation?

Lined up in series and sits in both wheel wells. basically double dinan oil coolers style. hopefully I will be able to beta test these guys out as it is supposed to be ready soon for production. These will also have custom cf shrouds to funnel air.

Tests on their race car running 16-17psi show maximum oil temps of 260 under heavy use I'm told. I can't wait to try this out. this sounds like the optimum solution for our cars .

I would love this to be the case. Let's cross our fingers. THANKS for the info.

I ordered the air vents and ducts of the 335is and found out the vents of the 335is fit the standard E92 Mtech (also pre LCI) bumper one to one increasing the airflow dramatically.

Do tell, Marcel (rhyme unintended...) What exactly did you order. Is there a story here?

This is the exact type of thing we're all looking for. Thank you. I'll post your results here when you install the new ducting.

Not really, the cover is only for looks and sound deadening, plus it retains so much of the heat under it!

As far as BRracing..yes, it is for their 135i...they finally had limp modes/check engine lights/fuel pump issues...like I told them they would eventually have. I know Bruce and Robb well.
