06 325i will not downshift in SMG mode

I have recently purchased a 2006 325i and it has the auto tranny with the SMG (I think that's what it's called) where you can shift up and down. It will NOT downshift. It will shift up when I tell it to but it will not downshift. I took the Gear Selector Lever off and looked for connection problems but didn't really know what to look for.

Can anyone help?

BTW it's called steptronic, SMG is Sequential Manual Gearbox it's what you find on new BMWs (X5, Z4, M3....).

Don't really know what the problem is unless you're trying to downshift at high speed into low gears.

It is called a Steptronic Transmission (Standard issue Slushmatic).

Few Questions:

Is your car still covered by the warranty?

Does it downshift automatically if you press the accelerator pedal into kickdown? (Should do it even in manual mode)

When you come to a stop, it automatically downshifts to M2 right?

X5's have a regular steptronic tranny. they just have an electronic shifter like the DCT's. new 5er's and 7er's have the same shifter.

If you try to downshift when the rpm's are too high the computer will not allow you too as it protects the engine. Try upshifting quickly and running at low speeds then downshifting then. If that doesn't work then you will want to take it in as its not normal.
