Cost for Detailing

My nieghbor wants me to do full paint correction on his Jag...but I have no idea what to charge. I've never done it for another person, but I've done my 3 cars. I'm thinking it will take me a full weekend, he's got swirl marks and holograms, but not much more than that. Any suggestions on what I should charge? I don't wanna over charge, but I also want to get compensated for my time.

Depending on what you do and what products you use I would say around 200-250

Yeah, I was thinking around 250. I'll use the Nanoskin Autoscrub as my claybar. Then M105 with a Surbuff pad and M205 with an Orange Pad. Then some Poor Boys World Natty's Blue Wax and BFWD. Sonax on the wheels and Tuf Shine Tire Clearcoat on the tires. I'm using all of the existing stuff that I have, so hopefully I get good results on his car. It's pretty close to Monaco Blue.

I would charge by the hour if what you are doing is performing a full paint correction. Charge him $XX for the prep work + $/hour for the paint correction.

Ex. ($75 for wash + clay + wax) + ($25-40/hr for paint correction)

obviously you wax at the end but it is just included in the fixed portion of the pricing

I would use M205 with a white pad instead. The orange pad has too much cut to use for a 2nd step polish. You can get good results with M205 and and orange pad alone if you are doing a 1 step. Curious as to why you would use tuf shine unless the customer asked for it. Its time consuming and takes multiple coats to get a halfway decent look.

If you think its going to take an entire weekend, roughly 16 hours+, I think 300-350 would be very reasonable. As you know i's very labor intensive work, especially if you're completing a 3 stage correction. Products alone will probably amount to around $50 (in terms of amount used) which sets you at profiting 250-300 or $15-$20/hour. Charging any lower than $300 is not a smart move in terms of profit.

not a good idea. he's inexperienced and will probably go through a lot of trial and error on a new paint system. if he charges by the hour, the client is going to push him to work faster (rightfully so). no one wins that way

$250 for FULL PAINT CORRECTION? That's dirt cheap. But then again, you said you are not doing it as a biz. I would say charge by the hr and set it at what you feel is right.

$200-$250? haha

Real talk though. If you actually know what you're doing and you are truly giving "full" correction, you will have 2+ days of hard labor in the job. No professional in their right mind will charge $100-$125 a day.

"real talk"

100% correction is pointless on a vehicle that isn't a show car. it'll be gone the next time the car is washed or a bird takes a crap.

most clients would be happy with two stage correction and a "set it and forget it" synthetic sealant.

I would charge roughly $300 for a one-step correction. Let's face it: you are wasting your weekend detailing a car as opposed to relaxing. Charge for your time PLUS for the work you provide.

Full correction and 100% correction are not necessarily considered the same by clients. Call it what you want, but when using m105, you're working towards full correction and are bound to invest a lot of time in doing it right and it is still giving away a ton of work at $250....no matter what you classify it as.

Regardless of a car being a show car or not, what the client wants is what they get. My personal opinion is to steer a client towards a package that fits into the car and owner's lifestyle.
