Cool Awesome 335d M Sport MPG

Hi guys,

For once I your not hearing about crap mpg on a 335d!

I picked up mine yesterday, a Le Mans blue 2008 57 E90 335d M Sport with 60k and a FBMWSH with Dakota leather, iDrive, Xenons etc.

My journey back home was 200.9 miles and I used 20.10 L of Texaco (not my prefered Shell) so the car was saying 47mpg but it works out at 45. something and I have to say I'm over the moon given I was sitting at 75 with cruise control on and I was still giving it the occasional tickle here and there.

The tyres that were on it are total shite so my Motorsport wheels have gone on today with the 700 mile old Goodyear Aysymetric 2 tyres on which were on my 330d when it did its Titanic impression. 6 months ago.

Now, I think because I did have Avon ZZR's and some even crappier tyres on the front which because they are so soft must have a high rolling resistance compared to the Goodyears so I can only expect the mpg to go up.

The car is getting remapped today so as the mpg went up on my 330d at cruising speeds I can only hope the same happens here.

The point of my message, yes to brag about the awesome mpg but also to say these cars are superb and people should not worry about their reputation with bad mpg.

On my trip I did employ just about every ounce of Roadcraft there is which helps considerably but this just goes to show what a superb machine the 335d is!

Lastly, are their any additives that can be safely used to clean the injectors and engine when I next change the oil to further increase my mpg?

That's pretty good

They are capable of mid 40s but on average it's lower. I'm averaging about 34mpg now

Glad you are enjoying it

Glad your enjoying using your car frugally. Shame Your not utilising those 286 ponies properly. Imagine what you could get out of a 320d

I used forte additives on my last service one for the dpf and one for the injectors, can't say it made a difference
but I didn't have any problems anyway it was just a preventative measure to stop the possibility of any problems :-)
Are my bulbs on their way by chance :-)

Now I'm mapped it was hard to use it with the rain today.

So much standing water and the journey was half motorway and half A road and country roads.

I only managed 38mpg over 100 miles but I suspect that's because I enjoyed the twisties and used as much power as I could.

I do think that the standing water on the M40 wouldn't have helped much even though I only sat at 73 mph most of the way.

Any thoughts on the water and resistance...?

I've noticed a drop in mpg if your clearing standing water on the motorway doesn't have drop.

Oh good, I thought so too.

I'm making an extra about 350 bhp at the fly and it should be about 510ft lbs and standing water is holding me up, damn that BMW's crap!! lol

To be honest, I'm shocked at how quick it is through the paddles :O

I just hope I can find a dry day to get a nigh in definitive answer on weather I'm getting better mpg.

I should though tbh as from reading about some maps, it woukd seem that only 35 parameters are changed compared to the 65 or so that have been tweaked on mine.

I have had 3 cars mapped by Dave at R Spec Performance in Bicester, they have all been superb!!

The engine would have been working harder having to push the car through the standing water which causes the resistance ,resulting in the engine using more fuel.

Tell me,and yes this is a serious question, did you buy the 335D for it's performance, and are now surprised by it's efficiency,or was it for some other reason?

Did you have the car mapped for the performance gains,or was it for the added fuel efficiency?

Lastly, being based in Hants, did you go to DMS for the remap?

I never knew the 35d was quite this economical. Wow so performance and pretty damn good economy.

Changing the tyres was a good move, you will further be able to increase your mpg by smoothing out the front with some detailers tape. Bassically covering most of groves and generally smoothing everything down to increase airflow. Paying attention to wipers area. I reckon a good few MPG's to be found there.

41 mpg is the best I've ever managed in 18 months with the 35D.
200 miles of solid motorway, another 3 days back on my normal commute and it was down to 35mpg where it lives in the summer and 32mpg in the winter!
That's with a remap and the odd puddle

I bought the 335d because I wanted the performance and economy, there is very little out there that can match it that still drives that well IMO.

The reason for my post in the first place was in respect of what others had writern about the cars poor economy.

Yes, I do live in Hampshire but I often travel to Banbury / Leamington area and my local mapper is Dave at R Spec Performance in Bicester.

This is my third car to be mapped by Dave and I'm always impressed.

I have to use fuelly as per signature below because my in dash mpg display is a clear 7 mpg out .. each time i fill up i reset both journey and computer mpg displays and the best i seem to get out of it is around 27 mpg whereas fuelly below clearly shows different. ( fuelly is distance based on fuel used) .. unless my odo is out too !!

I have fuelly, it's a real shame they don't have an app as I use an app that does the same thing.

My ODO is only 2mpg out I think, pretty good tbh.

I just love this car, awesome machine

Have you checked the calibration on your fuel computer? The previous owner had set mine to 1040 for some reason so it was miles out. I set it to the default of 1000 and it was almost perfect. Fine tuning it to 990 and it is never more than 0.3 out.

Apologies if I have misunderstood but Fuelly doesn't need an app because you can just put http://m.fuelly.com into your phone's browser. The interface they provide is virtually indistinguishable from an app (if you aren't too geeky ).

How do I do this? Would be worth a look.
