New Windscreen - How Much!!!

Last week whilst my car was parked up in 40 degree heat (whilst on holiday in France), what appeared to be a small stone chip turned into a nice 15 inch crack.

My insurance as per the norm would like me to go to Autoglass but I would like my rain sensors etc to still work afterwards. The good news is that my policy allows me to use a non approved repairer all be for a slightly higher excess.

I have however had to get a formal quote off my dealer first and now see why my insurer would rather I didn't

Considering the glass itself costs £221 plus VAT, the total bill comes in at £770

Wow

There is even a £5.24 line item to cover the replacement sticker in the top left hand corner of the screen (take a look, we all have them) telling us something about airbags.

Doesn't stop me getting it booked straight in but £770!!!! For a screen!!!

Ouch

I doubt the dealer will do the replacement. They'll supply the glass and sub it out to National Windscreens or similar.

I did ask this very question as I have heard of this happening however I have been told that no, it is their own people who will do this and I can watch them do it if I really want.

Personally I don't mind who does the job as long as it is done properly and everything still works as it should afterwards.

I got mine replaced in Spain.

Like a moron I forgot to take the tax disc off.

Drove around Europe (not that it matters) for a month without a tax disc.

Interesting about the airbag warning sticker. I wondered where the old Achtung had gone.

Having someone who doesnt regularly replace screens would actually concern me more. I doubt the dealer sees more than a handful of screen replacements in a year.

But.... thats where the warranty comes in :-)

that price is normal for autoglass, they rape insurance companies..

when my screen went on my previous car (Golf) i discovered i had no cover for it which was nice..

a few rings around found a guy to do it for like £250

had rain sensor too

When the screen cracked in my old Ferrari I was able to (fortunately) use the glass cover on my (Tesco!) insurance policy and pay just £60 excess.

The bill that Autoglass were sending to the insurer was over £2k

The screen itself (gen. Ferrari item) was a four figure sum.
There were some (black, painted) aluminium trims that clip round the oustide of the screen - they are a one use only item and are f*ucked in the screen replacement process, hence they also had to be replaced, at a cost of £600.

Is expensive business, changing screens. Thank the Lord for glass cover....

The dealer might well do it themselves, but will want 2 hours @ £125.00 PH + vat on top.
