Question Upgrading your nav maps in the DC/Balto Metro Area

This past weekend I found that the maps in my daughter's '10 E91 are out of date.

I called one local DC dealer to ask what they'd charge to update the maps. I was cited $350 and told it takes all day long.
  • Have any of you recently been quoted a better price?
  • Are there other ways to update the maps besides having the dealer do it?
  • Are there significantly faster -- like 20 minutes to an hour, even a couple hours would be okay -- ways of updating the maps?
Mostly, I just want to get a better price. It's not a matter of affording $350 (I know my kid won't spend that sum on it, but I want her to have current maps.); it's a matter that I don't like being gouged. $350 just seems insanely expensive for consumer grade software, especially since one can use any number of other navigation programs on one's phone. You'd think that the BMW stores would want to be somewhat price competitive if they expect to sell the damn things. After all, phone navigation products are cheap and are just as convenient, some of them being easier to use than the BMW nav.

Note:
I say it's a '10, but in all honesty, it might be an '11. I'm not sure now that I'm actually trying to remember and cite the right year. Old age. LOL I wish the car companies would just follow the calendar with their model year designations; it'd make things so much easier.

Thanks for any input you may have

All the best.

I paid less than $100 to update my map last year. You can download the ISO from torrents and get the FSC code from sellers online. Just search in the navigation/iDrive section on how to do it yourself.

TY. I'll see what I can come up with searching around on the forums.

You wouldn't know if by the time I've bought the FSC code and and ISO, and acquired the computer science degree I'll need (LOL...) to implement the approach....would I have just been better off paying the $350?

All the best.

There are local coders who have the software, you'll just need to give them your daughters VIN and pay the licensing fee plus whatever the coder charges. Also, if she has a 2011, you can get the USB stick at the dealership for $100 I thought...

I updated my 2010 maps to 2013 last year. Bought the FSC code from a referreal on the Nav subforum (very easy and quick process). Another member in the area was nice enough to let me use his torrented ISO, thanks Nate! Took about an hour for the entire update, so the entire day quote from the dealer sounds like rubbish, although $350 from a dealer sounds right. You can get everything for less than $100 if you have the 32gb USB stick needed for the map file.

Anyone have the 2014 map on USB already? Maybe we can get a group map update meet?

Do you know if the 2014 maps even update anything in the DC area? I know maps for all areas are not updated every year. They update different parts each year.

not sure about this - I had an 2014 x3 loaner the other week and the map interface was a little different and seemed more "updated" than mine.

Off Topic:
Am I the only one who thinks it's silly that BMW sells a map named for 2015 when 2015 hasn't arrived?

I sort of get it with model years associated with cars, but how can BMW tell me a road exists in such and such a place in 2015 before 2015 gets here? Would it not make more sense to issue, in 2015, the maps that are called the 2014 maps?

All the best.
