HPFP Failed, middle of busy highway, stopped DEAD. Lucky to not get hit.

Well, looks like I joined the HPFP failure club today. Returning to work, main road back to our worksite, sweeping corner with barrier walls, 2 lanes, doing the posted speed limit of about 35 mph, heavy trafffic.

Car just stopped DEAD mid turn. Literally. No juice, nothing. Steering got heavy, I pulled as far over to the right as I could, middle of a blind corner, just about a cars-width between a barrier wall and the traffic lane. Wouldn't restart. Long cranks. Very occassionally, would get a bit of gas, then die again. From what I've read, classic HPFP symptoms.

Hit the SOS button (didn't have my cell phone with me - I usually don't, not allowed on our secured work site), got the local PD to come and protect the lane while BMW arranged for a wrecker. Was lucky, wrecker was in the area, got towed off about 30 minutes after.

Amazing how sudden this shut down. No warning, no long cranks, nothing. Just went stone dead.

Oh, I had retrofitted Bluetooth, and decided to go whole-hog and activate Assist as well. Happy for that, now. Without my cell, would not have been nearly as safe to take care of this.

Other details: 07 E90, 6MT, 24k miles.

Now, where do I learn the secret handshake?

Sorry to hear of your troubles and it reaffirms my thankfulness that I own a 330i with the N52. BMW really needs to address solve this problem by re-engineering the pumps (rather than just replacing with the "new and improved" (read:same) unit) before someone is killed by the failure. They are losing the respect of current owners and keeping some customers away from their showrooms. It's disgraceful.

Wow!
If that happens to me,it will happen that one time and the 335 will be traded or sold immediately.
I don't mind the pump going with some warning signs but that's unacceptable..

Thumbs down

"What? This could never happen. The HPFP failing is just a myth. I have an 07 build with 12,000 miles and ZERO problems."

This is the problem: BMW decides that it's more cost effective for them to warranty and replace the pumps rather than doing a recall. That's all great, but it doesn't address the issue that it could leave you on the side of the road and in a risky situation.

Volvo made the same choice several years ago with their failing ETMs. Instead of a recall, they simply extended the warranty on the failing part.

In both cases, the manufacturer knew the parts are questionable but with bean counting have decided to replace on an individual basis.

Once someone gets killed or seriously injured, only then will they be forced to do a recall.

None of this ever sits well with the consumer.

It's not a matter of if....but when it fails..and when it fails it will not always give you any signs until it juist happens.....so....start for a new car

Not quite yet.
I only do about 5-6K miles a year on the 335 and will keep the car maybe 4 years so I may get lucky and not have the problem or at least get a warning sign.
If not,I'll have it fixed and then dump it and go back to Lexus.
The great majority of people with the HPFP problem get long starts, dash lights, limp mode etc warnings.

Yeah, that sucks. At least mine gives me problems when parked. Lol. This car is just ridiculous. I think that it will take someone getting killed and the family to sue the s*** out of them until they do something about it.

I love my new car, but now I have a recurring thought of being in the middle of a blast around somebody on Route 8 in Ma (two fun twisting lanes through the Berkshires) with no shoulder, and it decides to quit just as I get even to the other car and have some semi-truck coming at me. Somebody will have to sue for me....

OP here. I honestly had only the momentum left in the car to get it pulled to the side of the road. Given the blind corner and very limited space, etc., I did not get out of the car to check things out. I had BMW Assist call the local PD, and waited for them to show up, block off traffic behind, and ensure I could safely exit before checking things out.

I guess I'm one of the very few that have had a sudden failure. Let me say, in a different locale/speed, it could have been worse. Luckily, I was in the right-hand lane and able to pull over. Had I been in the left lane, this would not have been pretty. It really is a blind, sweeping corner with very heavy traffic and medians/barrier walls. The local police commented I was pretty lucky to get it pulled over where I did, too.

Chalk mine up as a close-call for a possible accident. I don't recall reading about any accidents here, a few on-ramp failures is about it.

Car is at the dealer now, had a call from the SA, and I mentionned it was likely the fuel pump had failed. He was smooth, and didn't indicate pro or con if was even aware of this problem. Go figure.

Glad you're safe!

Just out of curiosity, what brand of gas do you usually use for the car?
Some say the HPFP failure may be due to ethanol content...

Forgot to mention, bone-stock and no mods.

I've been filling with Shell Premium, FYI. We do have 10% enthanol in my state, for what that's worth.

The engine fire in the Testarossa back in 99 was fairly comical, to be honest.

Valve guides going south in the 456 makes the fuel-pump problems in our 335s seem downright pedestrian.
