CA Emissions for DP back exhaust
Has anyone gone to get emissions with a DP back exhaust installed and passed (like AE, Vanguard, etc)
From what I've read, the only test that's a real concern is the visual test since emissions and functional tests pass with the 2 front cats on the stock DP. Also, I'm reading that N55s don't even have secondary mid cats!? Would a smog tech even know the difference between N54 & N55? Couldn't I just say my cats are in my DP and BMW made it that way? |

You are correct assuming they don't look up your VIN and see the number of cats installed from the factory. You'll pass emissions and visual if they only count the stock DPs.

Well since CA doesn't require a new car to be smogged in the first 6 years of it's life, you might have a hard time finding somone who as done the test. I beleive preowned cars are 5 years, so that would be starting this year.

CA is 6 years from manufacture date. So with an 08 you don't have to smog till 2014 unless you get popped by a cop to go see the ref. With an exhaust you run the risk because of the noise. The ref can look up how many cats your came with stock. But if you go see the ref, an aftermarket exhaust is not recommended.

I figured it'd be difficult to find someone that's gone through it...
Looks like I might get away with it for smog purposes. A ref might be a different story, but I'm hoping I won't get hassled too much for a loud exhaust if I keep the stock DPs... I just don't want to keep my stock piping in my apartment. Maybe I can convince my GF that hanging my exhaust on the wall counts as art. |

true. I'm looking into selling my car, so I'll need to smog it. I'll let you know the results.
