Cause for oxygen sensor failure

My car has 36000 miles. It started erratically recently. Finally got a check engine light today and the code is P112D. Dealer appointment Wednesday.

Is this common on N52? Will it be a every 2 years maintenance item? What can contribute to make it fail, other than gas obviously? My mpg dropped a bit recently (from 21-22 to 19-20).... can it be the reason of it?

I don't have an aftermarket intake, just the BMW Performance Exhaust and a PBX.

O2 sensors go bad for all manufacturers and is not uncommon.

I cleaned mine at 50000 miles

I had a mouse chew through the wires on one of my O2 sensors in my truck a month ago. I might be that. Not sure about Canada, but most US insurance companies cover rodent damage under comprehensive insurance.

naaaa - your aftermarket chip won't affect anything. BMW had extra ink so they just wasted it by randomly telling you that a chip will cause you warranty woes.

Please post back and let us how much how much you paid for the repair.

So far they worked on coils and spark plugs and rejected the idea of a faulty O2 sensor. They asked to keep the car overnight to have another a cold start.

Well they dismissed it too quickly because it turned out to be.... an oxygen sensor (11787558073).
