I want to see it in person. A lot of vehicles that look iffy in pics seem to look a lot better in person. Headlights do look weird, cartoonish to me...

I loved my E60. It actually drove better than my current F30.

Saw it in person during a release event at BMW meetup. Hideous.

Design is really subjective and despite the complaints from the E39 and old-school BMW guys, E60 sales were very strong.
I was one of those old school E39 guys that hated the E60 style. I thought Bangle was using BMW as his personal canvas to make a name for himself. He tore down the sausages of different lengths philosophy. Some liked it. some hated what he had done. I was in the second group. Why? BMW has always been, at least in my mind, about design evolution. From each 5er before the E60, and I owned three of them, you could see design cues from model to model evolving the car. Bangle was having none of that. The E60 leaped in new directions. This flame surfacing bullshit. To me, it looked like the front, sides, and back were designed by different committees that did not talk to each other. The E60 was so off putting to me I simply kept my 2003 540 with M-tech package for an additional 6 years just go get past the E60. I saved a lot of money and drove a great car in the bargain.

I was just shocked at the time that BMW leadership would give up their the traditional evolution of their cars to that arrogant f**K.

I have gotten used to the styling a bit. The car was successful from a unit sales stand point. Owners liked the way it drove. I would call that success. It just wasn't my cup of tea.

Now to answer your question, it is because it is an ugly BMW with a Bangle-butt and slab sides.
Hate may be overused, but it a perfect word for discussions about the E60 specifically and Bangle in general. What's he designing now, refrigerators or something

He hasn't been involved in automobile design since he left BMW. He currently works for Samsung so maybe he is designing refrigerators.

I hate Chris Bangle. I think he secretly designed the Pontiac Aztek.

But whatever, I loved my E60 M5. Badass bitch.

E60s are totally boring unless they happen to come from the factory with a S85. In that case they are TOTALLY sick, and great looking.

I also don't get why till this day many don't like the E60?! Maybe it was just the Pre-LCI that drew a lot of enthusiasts away but the E60 LCI looked awesome and IMO the E60 LCI 550 M-Sport is sooooo much sicker than the F10 550 M-Sport!

No hate here, I love my E60. It looks fantastic. The current crop of BMWs is a snooze-fest, and the E39 looked like a bloated turtle. I'm a huge fan of all of the Bangle-era designs, even the E65.

I have to admit I did not like the E60 when it first came out, but I honestly think it's aged well and does look good...not E39 good, but good...

Wow interesting perspectives here on the e60. I had no idea there was this much dislike for the shape.
Personally I am a big fan of the e60 in particular trims such as sport pack vehicles and the M5. I just picked up a 2008 535i Sport Pack car with the 18's and sport suspension as my daily driver. I love the way my car looks with that sporty aggressive stance and the 18's. I also really love the way the car drives. I am in and out zipping around with that car with no hesitation. It drives like a BMW.

What also makes the e60 even more appealing to me is how bland the F10 5 series is. It so soft and almost feels numb. I drove the f10 535i and boy was it boring in terms of acceleration and handling. The e60 version is so much better. The 550i also felt the same way but with a little more power.

I can understand the design debate especially because of how beautiful the e39 is. In fact my search was either specifically for the car I have now or a 2003 e39 540i sport. I just happened to find this car at a great deal first.

Whether you like the look of the e60, it is undeniably a BMW in terms of driving characteristics.

No doubt about the driving characteristics being better than the newer BMWs (that's why our "new" cars are not BMW), but still though.... uuuuugly! Plus we are not even talking interior, with those dual camel humps!

I will own an E39 M5 one of these days. And yes, I will pay the prices at EAG because they are the only ones that pretty much have the lowest mileage ones you can find. Best M5 ever.

E60M5 with catless exhaust. Doesn't sound any better than that. Freaking monster.

I'm pretty sure Bangle desined the E46 and penned the E46 refresh as well (which actually does look better)
