Crankcase breather 320d M47

Is there a way of telling if my 320d has the vortex or loo roll style crankcase breather without taking the car apart?

I don't really want to take the car apart to find it's already been replaced.

Not that I know of. I took mine apart on my one series to find it had already been done.

I would just buy one and fit it for the peace of mind.

I don't think there's any point in fitting a new vortex one if you already have one. They don't get clogged up like the foam type.

It's not an expensive part, and they can get blocked. Not as bad as the foam ones but still possible.

The bolts holding it in look untouched so I guess it's probably a loo roll.

Do I need to remove the strut brace to get to it?

Do you need any specialist tools to remove it?

Sorry to bump this.

Watched a few videos online on how to do it. The wiring harness to the injector rail needs unscrewing I've noticed some people move the fuel line too I think. Do I need to do that? The clips are quite fragile aren't they?

I dont think any E90's got the loo roll.

I've seen some on here suggest the vortex ones should still be replaced as they gunk up internally.

Seen a couple of cases where people with 2005 early 2006 320d's have had the loo roll.

Worth a check I guess. Bolts look like they've never been touched.

Tried to do this on Saturday but didn't have a torx 18 socket to remove the strut braces. I've ordered one now so it should be here any day now.

What size is the torx star bolt holding down the rear engine cover?

im sure the rear engine cover is the same allen bolts as the front part of the cover

its worth noting that the strut braces have two different sizes of E-torx bolts, the one under the scuttle (that holds both bars) is larger than the ones on the strut towers
