iPhone 4 repair

The power button on my iPhone 4 has today with no warning whatsoever decided to fail.

The button now does not press in and does not function at all. I am on a 30 day contract and my phone is sim free. This along with a potential new model coming out soon means that I would rather repair than replace.

Has anyone had this problem or could point me in the right direction for getting this problem sorted?

Cheers

It's worth going into an Apple store.

They are very good at customer care and often replace phones out of warranty for free with a refurbished one.

Funnily enough this was a replacement 2 years ago for my original which had the same issue.

However that one was still in warranty at the time where this isn't. Heard they charge £100 for a replacement handset as well as taking your defective one in.

I've used this company a couple of times for ipad screen replacements, always been happy with the service.

Thanks. I'll contact them. Can't see a power button repair on their website.

I think you can probably pick up the power button for around £2~ incl shipping (I think its more likely to be something jammed in it though), with the tiny screwdrivers costing probably £5 (I got mine for free with a new LCD)

I've had a cracked screen, camera wasn't working, no sound on videos etc etc. They're really easy to dismantle and reassemble - plenty of you tube videos to help as well

Ive used http://mobileease.co.uk and was very pleased with the quick turnaround.
They're quoting £40 for a new power button on an Iphone 4

I am tempted to give a DIY a go. I know though that if things go wrong I will be even more annoyed than I am now.

I repaired my iphone 3 once for a faulty headphone socket and I'll never attempt a self repair again! Even though my job was perfectly successful, considering I could have just paid someone else £30 to do it, it was never worth the hassle

That seems fairly reasonable.

What did you use them for?

If it is £40 for a repair or £100 for a refurbished phone, you might find the refurbished phone will be worth more when you sell it come the phone change time.

The refurbished phones look as good as new.

Take it that is from Apple via the Genius bar?

If you do decide to, set yourself about 2 hours aside to do it - you don't want to rush anything!

Just go slow and gentle, also lay every screw out in the order it came in - because they're nearly all different sizes and will make putting it back together easier!

Assume you've had it longer than 12 months? I had the same issue with my 4s but fortunately still under warranty so apple replaced with a new phone. Go in their website, it'll ask for the serial number and will then tell you if covered or what to do next.

One of you chaps with a dodgy iPhone could of course snap up the Nexus 4 RCUK has for sale. Move over to the dark side, you know you want to.

You and the OP should search youtube for fixes. I don't know about the power button but the home button has two different fixes that don't need you to open the phone.

+if its a software issue thats stopping the home button from working, you need to re calibrate the button search youtube for iphone 4 home button software fix

+if it is a hardware issue you need to a rub a small bit of strong alcohol like vodka into the crease of the button. Press it a couple times, tap it out, let it dry. Then it should work.

I tried both on and the second one solved my problem. That was 4 weeks ago and its working as new still.

If neither work and you still don't want to pay to fix it, you can activate the 'virtual home' button via the settings.

Again, I don't know about the power button but it could be some dirt stuck in there that a bit of alcohol can remove.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have activated the virtual home button and been using that since it decided to break. I will give the alcohol method a try and see if that has any effect.
