Battery & Water Pump = $2089

My battery was dying so I had an appointment to bring it in for replacement this morning. Get 3 miles form home and get Overheating Warning and engine starts powering down. I made into an Autozone parking lot where I was able to call AAA and get a tow to my BMW dealer 35 miles away. I was hoping the Overheating waring was just from the battery dying, but I'm told the water pump failed and needs to be replaced. Total $2200 with Tow

So why did this happen 1 month after my CPO Warranty ran out? Damn..

Heh you took out of warranty bmw to dealer, you crazy? lol
Now since you know what it is, call bmw indys or good shops and ask for labor qoute then buy all the parts from tischer bmw and tow it once more.

I second not going to the dealership out of warranty unless you're a masochist.

Next time use an indy or do it yourself. These cars are NOT hard to work on as long as you have the correct tools. They're worth the investment for the dollars you'll save. I haven't had to do my waterpump yet, but I've done my battery, flushed/changed all fluids, done a vanos solenoid, valve cover gasket, idler pulley, belt, blower motor, etc... plus some coding. I am a former mechanic, but all of this stuff is very easy DIY as you can see from other member feedback on the forum. The more money you save in repairs the more you have for mods

They have to replace the thermostat as well.

But to the OP that sucks. My water pump failed this past March and had it towed to the dealership as well. God it was a nightmare.

Negotiate with them, theyll come down.

1k for waterpump/ thermo and 2-300 for battery. They may settle at 1500

Also call another dealer and ask them for a quote. Use the lowest to negotiate

It's amazing how many people are "afraid" to haggle. I found that to be the case on the never ending "how much should an extended warranty cost' threads. they get shot down just one or two times and they become puppies with tails between their legs

Yeah, with my 335 coupe in the dealer's maintenance bay 35 miles from home, I'm in a great negotiating position. There are 3 Dealers in my general area, none less than 25 miles from me. I could spend a week and $100's of dollars towing this thing around. I don't know about you all, but my time is worth something and getting it fixed is my #1 priority at this point. I was just pissed about the timing and expense so soon after CPO expiration. I know I'm no BMW mechanic and the idea of buying tools and software to DIY this stuff myself makes nonsense at all.

I had mine fixed at a dealer. I think it came out to $1600. I could have tried to do it myself but it's my DD and my only car. Ordering parts would take at least a few days even with express shipping (mine broke on a Friday so I had the weekend as well). I would need at least a full day or two partial days to attempt to fix it (I'm slow), which I wouldn't have until the following weekend, and I would need to bum rides off people for the next week.

TLDR, had the dealer fix it and got a free F30 loaner for a few days. When you factor in everything other than just the price, the dealer is sometimes the best option. You paying a premium for the convenience.

Sorry about your bad luck...Independent shops are the way to go with any out of warranty BMW or any brand for that matter, but if you have to use a dealer with all cars, I call all local dealers and ask for price quotes on parts. You would be amazed (or not) on how drastically different parts can cost at different dealers.

Independent shop...mine went out in my last 335 while under CPO. BMW assist took care of everything. Free flat bed tow, replacement of everything and they did the thermostat while it was in. It was spendy though..almost 2k. It's smart to sell your 335 before your CPO runs out.
