I am still running original water pump now at 116000 miles. Should I change it now as preventive maintainance? Because I don't want to have it break when I was driving, which seems like it has to be towed to the closest dealer.

OP, please call BMW NA customer service immediately and see if they will do a goodwill CPO coverage of the waterpump since you are sooooo close to the warranty being up. They will pobably do it for $50 or maybe something a little more... but they will do you right if you talk nicely and respectfully. Tell them you love the car and hope to one day soon get into another BMW.
Always price around with other dealerships... even after the fact you can still come back to the table and tell them that the prices they charged you were too high compared to comparable dealerships rates/prices. It's your money... fight for every last penny in this economy. |

My battery was done and twice after jumping it the water temp warning overheat came on and then red light limp mode. Turned the car off both times and the restarting seemed to be the fix. Put a new battery in($350) and haven't had that issue since.

I'm hopeful my WP+TStat dies before my CPO is up, otherwise, I will drop in a new car battery + register come this winter when my CPO is up. I'll be at 6 years in service by Dec 2013. So even if the battery still has life left in it... I would prefer to have a fresh battery in it to last me another 6 years. I keep hearing about people having the WP last till 150k miles or so... I am wondering if that might be because of battery issues and not the actual failure of the part???

Would the CPO even cover a new bat? My CPO falls off in a couple months...

It teaches you basic skills to get through life perhaps?? Did you haggle or try to negotiate price on the initial car purchase?
There is NO shame or loss of pride in trying to get your money's worth. It just takes a little effort. The question is, is the effort worth the cost in savings. Only you can decide that.

That aside, is it true that there's a more robust/durable water pump out now that is can be used to replace the existing ones? I'm assuming dealerships are using this updated one by default if your pump fails? I have a 2009 and it seems to be a crapshoot as to when these water pumps fail, IF they'll fail (seems to be fairly common, but these forums only represent a subset of BMW owners with a skew towards reporting issues). If there is a more durable water pump, I'll probably buy it and have an indy shop replace it once my CPO warranty is out. I'm hoping that's how this ends up going *knocks on wood*. I take the occasional long drive that takes me through less populated areas which makes a tow inconvenient. My last adventure with a flat tire had me waiting 2ish hours for the tow truck and had me get to my destination 5 hours late. Really sucks that this has to be a concern.

Damn it sucks to hear that. Did the exact same job on my car about 3 months ago. Totaled out, I spent 585 dollars. Stray fffaaarrrr away from the dealership on things like that.

yikes! just searched the forums and noticed the WP failure poll thread with milege etc. But I still have hope it was a low battery glitch as another symptom was my oil temp would not come on sometimes as well. Since the battery replacement the oil temp works flawless now. I have driven the car thousands of miles since and no overheat warnings/problems. Need to look into WP failure symptoms, are they electrical(not turning on) failures or internal mechanical(leaking) failures when they go?
