Rear brakes wore down before fronts???

I replaced my front/rear pads and rotors at the same time. Recently I got the red BRAKE warning come up so I went to replace my pad sensors not thinking i would be close to needing pad replacement. I couldn't get the rear ones on and realized the pads were pretty worn. So I checked the fronts out and was able to change the sensor easily.

Anyone else gotten this? I always noticed that I get more dust in the back, and it seems very opposite. I know our cars do use the rears more than normal, but not more than the fronts.

thanks in advance!

Do you drive aggressively or do a lot of burnouts? Our cars have a eLSD which is an open differential that uses the rear brakes to move power around. The downside is that it can burn through the rear brakes pretty quick.

I have never done a burn out in my car (don't want to buy tires), and I don't drive aggressive. The only thing I guess could be is that I am in rush hour traffic twice a day.

Maybe the guide pins are jammed up but can't see how that could happen on both sides at the same time. And they're on separate circuits so it's hard to believe just the rear pistons might not retract enough.

Have you used a brake lube/grease like Permatex Ceramic high Temp and maybe it's gotten on the rubber guide bushings? Or maybe used non-polymer-safe brake cleaner and gotten it on the same bushings? Either way they could swell and jam the caliper from freely sliding.

If you have active cruise control I believe it operates through the rear brakes...

The pads are worn evenly so I don't think it would be the pins. I am not sure of the brand of pad lube I used, it was red though. I was careful to not get it on anything but the pad.

Also I have cruise but have never once used it in the 2 years I have had the car.

Are there any types of adjustment pins it anything like that?

Most or all car nowadays have Electronic Brake Force Distribution. In some systems, EBD distributes more braking pressure at the rear brakes during initial brake application before the effects of weight transfer become apparent.

Going by the Bentley manual for my car the lube for the rear pads is only to be applied to the places where the ears contact the carrier and on the carrier only. How does the piston boot look? Can you manually retract the piston or is it stuck? Are the guide pin rubber bushings clean and still flexible, any material jammed in with the pins under the caps?

I'll have to check that thank you.

Hmm wonder what causes this? Does the active brake assist (hill brake whatever) hold off the back brakes?

not in my case, I don't think since I'm auto. During this period I did mostly highway, thinking cruise control(?) on downhill maybe? At least highway explains high miles for both. Also, I could be wrong, but I think the pad thickness is different, thinner out back.

I have auto too and when I sit on a hit my car doesn't move even with the brake not touched.

I have never used the cruise either.

I didn't pay attention to the thickness when I installed them.

I think you guys are over analyzing the situation. It's normal for the rear brakes to wear out faster because of design and software in the ABS module. Brake are initially applied to the rear so your car won't lean foward as much and feels better to the driver. Hill-hold/hill assist Is also controlled by the ABS control module. It activates the hydraulic pump and so forth. I hope this helps somebody and not disregarded like my last post. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"
