^ Without the check engine light they wouldn't have replace your HPFP no matter what you told them or how good of a rapport you have with the dealer.

I guess we've all seen the visio diagrams which tell the dealership specifically what they are to do. The most discouraging statement is to clear out the codes, and if they don't come back, they are done with the diagnosis.

People have oversimplified the problem so much so that they actually believe that all they need is a hpfp. Again, I say, how come people have had 3 or 4 or more? It's obviously not enough to have a hpfp replaced.

Anyhow, until I switched dealerships, I myself didn't realize that yes, there are dealerships who are better than others. My selling dealership finds customers to be an annoyance. You walk in at 7:10 am, they are all on facebook and it's like having a customer showup is a real nuisance.

My 335i was in the shop with hard starting. They only did a software update for the whole car. Supposedly (according to the service advisor) the software modifies the sequence for starting.

I took my 335 in for a rough idle and long starts and was told by the dealer BMW will not replace the fuel pump unless it fails or throws a code.. When I called BMW usa they confirmed this.

That is also what I have been told. Nothing different than before, just calling it voluntary environmental recall to make it seem like something. ( How are the volunteers chosen?)

Sorry to jump in here, I recently became a 335i owner. After only a week of owning the 07 335i sedan it started the long cranking issue. I've been reading here about the voluntary recall and decided to just make an appointment with East Bay BMW. They were very easy to deal with. We already installed Dinan stage 2 software on the car and I was hoping it wouldn't be an issue. They went ahead and upgraded to the latest software per the recall. But according to my SA the issue remained. They also found that the HPFP was replaced in Sep 09 be the PO. After about two days of troubleshooting, they just replaced the HPFP and I picked up the car.

The long cranking issue has been resolved. But we reloaded the latest Dinan Stage 2 software along with another customer and it does seem a bit slower on both cars.

FWIW - East Bay BMW was very easy to deal with and I didn't even have the letter. I just read this post and went in. Car starts and seems better, but I am not convinced it is completely resolved. Hope this information helps some of you. I was pleased with my dealer experience for this issue.

I wonder if these devices that can clear codes can insert them as well.

Wow, this all looks so familiar.....Yep, been here done this 29.2.
Anyone remember that fiasco? The way this is being handled is very similar to how that was handled(or not handled). Makes you wonder if this isn't just a continuation or that was just the beginning of this.

+1 on East Bay BMW. We bought our 335xia there last month. Their sales and service staff have been very good to deal with. Clearly earned their 10's.

edit: just noticed that our garages are somewhat similar.

A lot of people write they smell fuel for a day or so after replacement, but this seems odd. Please give any circumstances and info in a separate thread if he posts the video. Just interesting.........

I've had two previous fuel pump replacements. In the past had no problem getting a new fuel pump Recently Started getting again the usual signs of an imminent failure. Took it to the dealer three times. Each time got the run around - need software upgrade, replace vanos sensors etc. - but no fuel pump. Finally recall came out. I bitched mre than normal. Manager intervened and third new fuel pump was installed.

Be persistent. Talk to the service manager.

Note: all recall installs are using a specific model fuel pump. Service manager indicated all n54 fuel pumps stink. They have isolated one that stinks less and are doing all recall installs with that pump.

Is 'service manager' a real thing? I once was transferred on the phone to so called service manager, had emails back and forth and when finally met him he was just sitting in the cubicle as a regular service adviser.

They're all built in the same place and the motor is the same!! So gay. Especially since my car is U.S. spec. Are they not aware that there are A LOT of US spec BMW's running around Germany and many other countries? Not too good communication going on at BMW...

But anyway, here is the response I got. I actually got an E-mail just before this talking only about the X5 or something. Even though I told them every detail about my car..

"To Whom It May Concern:

I apologize, I believe we may have sent you information regarding a different recall in our prior response.

Thank you for contacting BMW of North America, LLC regarding our voluntary recall announcement of some model year 2007-2010 BMW vehicles equipped with twin-turbo inline six cylinder engines. In the affected vehicles, a failure of the high pressure fuel pump may exhibit symptoms such as long crank engine starting times along with the illumination of the “Service Engine Soon” light. In certain cases, the driver may experience reduced engine performance in a Safe Mode. An audible tone and an “Engine Malfunction” display warning will accompany any reduced engine performance.

Affected BMW models include:
• Model Year 2007-2010 335i, 335xi, 335i xDrive (all body types)
• Model Year 2008-2010 135i (all body types)
• Model Year 2008-2010 535i, 535xi, 535i xDrive (sedan & wagon)
• Model Year 2008-2010 X6 xDrive35i Sports Activity Coupes
• Model Year 2009-2010 Z4 Roadster sDrive35i

Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification in December requesting the scheduling of a service appointment with an authorized BMW Center to inspect their vehicle. Drivers who now experience long cranking at start and/or reduced engine performance with illuminated warnings should immediately schedule a service appointment with an authorized BMW Center.

BMW remains committed to maintaining the highest level of automotive excellence. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience should your vehicle be affected.

Please note these recalls apply only to United States specification vehicles that are serviced within the United States. Once you and your vehicle return to the United States, we would be happy to discuss your concerns."

feeling hpfp paranoid

Dear friends, i drive a 2007 335 coupe 33k miles, and I have been reading about all the hpfp that are failing, and I want to know if I have the same problem, a few weeks ago I was driving fast and the power went away and I had the "service engine soon" light on and the 1/2 power light on as well, so I stopped I turn off the engine, and turn it on again and it was all fine, but every time I drive fast and push the engine hard I have 1/2 power light and "ses" light back on again. All I want to know is that if the hpfp is failing, could the car sometimes be running normal and from time to time be in limp mode when I push the engine?.

thanks very much.

I admit I haven't read through the whole thread so apologies of this was answered...

For those of you who have gone in for the voluntary recall, how long did it take em to do the work? I want to get my car looked at before I deploy to Afghanistan for a year.

Maybe this has been asked before but does anyone know what exactly fails on the pump?
