I started to notice my shift knob have some play. when I am in gear I could move it left/right and I find my shifts aren't going smooth into each gear slot. what could this problem be?

had the same issues, still solving them progresively
Full solution is - Shift linkage ( the bronze little cylinder) at transmission needs changing 20-30$ in parts but real hard to get in there - best done when dropping the exhaust - White Ball joint busing on shift lever is work out - best done when Short shift kit SSK is installed - Shift lever needs replacing due to lower Eye being worm out - best done when Short Shift Kit is installed - Permanent solution would be a better Short shift lever with more durable Ball & lower eye, and a DSSR/DTM Selector rod
