I just wanted to point out that most car insurance companies give a rebate for having a car alarm. Mine gives $100 a year discount. Since I've installed the car alarm I've already started making a profit. My only point is that it could be possible that your not saving any money by bypassing the system. Check with your ins company... it may be worth it to just get the alarm installed. I dont think they give rebates for blinking clown noses.. lol. |

great little 555 project, but frankly if you spend 2-3 hours on it, you might as well buy the alarm kit for $230 and actually have the alarm (and the insurance benefit)...
I've also seen led blinking gizmos in Radio Shack and the local dollar store (for $1). Still, I think the $230 alarm make more sense for a $30K+ car... but check out your dollar store or RS if you think that a blinking led is the right way to go... |

I did it using the original drawing. Works great. If anyone needs help email me or something. I have new picture to post which I will soon. They show exactly what to solder and what to leave out. That's the tricky part.

I finally got a chance to put this on....gosh..it's hella tough to open that overhead, i even had the outer aluminum trims bent out of shape..
All the wiring are done inside the overhead, I didn't open the mirror cover.

the dealer can program this for you for 25 bucks when you go in for an oil change. its very simple as all it requires is getting hooked up to the machine.

Okay, so I got the circuit built and working. Just two questions, what brown and black wires am I looking for that run to the led? There seem to be a bunch of brown wires above the headliner coming from the mirror.
Second, how do you reattach the mirror? I have been trying for an hour without any luck. |

So I got it all together and it works like a champ. I had to make some minor changes to the circuit. The wires you are looking for above the headline are red/purple and grey/purple. The led has a constant 12v and uses the ground wire as the switch.

I tried to build this device today. I had ordered all of the parts from Radioshack.com but two of them were not exactly correct. Firstly, I couldn't get LED lamps which rated over 3 volts, so I burnt them out almost immediately. Secondly, the capacitor part number listed was 1000uf but 50v; it's almost 5x the size of the one pictured. I built the device and got the LEDS to flash once or twice but after they burnt out I couldn't tell if it was working. I hooked a multimeter up to it and saw values raising and then dropping (the actual values I can't recall) but I don't trust my device in my car since I don't know if will cause any damage or not. So, thanks for the DIY, I gave it my best effort but I think I will shy away from ultimately implementing this one. Now I just have to decide if I want to spend the money on the actual alarm (I'm already getting the insurance credit for it, so its more for peace of mind) or asking the dealer if they can make it work without the alarm installed. Thanks again!

I was asked a question on how to open lights/sun-roof panel. Please see this thread for detailed instructions http://www.e90post.com/forums/showpo...2&postcount=27
