I haven't taken off the panel or trim in my car, but just peering down into the channel I can see what appears to be the lower part of the strip that touches the window - and it looks like it's felt-covered to me.
Yet when I roll my driver's window down it sounds like there's a pebble scraping against the window, and both windows have vertical marks on the interior. What's to stop debris from getting trapped between the moleskin and the window?

You can't see if your car has felt just be peering down into the door panel. ALL 3 series have felt on the upper top most inside weather strip. It's the bottom one that needs the Tint Protector Felt. All the 2008-2010 3 series sedans and coupes need the felt. It looks like some 2011's have felt and others don't. So if you have a 2011 check. If you have a 08-2010 then you will need the kit. |

tint scratched due to in-door wiper now plastic instead of fiber/cloth
I was told by the tint company that sold me the tint my Beemer ruined was that BMW changed the design of the window wiper inside the door that keeps the window from rattling when it is down starting with the 2007 or 2008 models. With the new tint kits from vendors in the know you can get this wiper replaced with one that works correctly(?) but the place I went to would charge for it now, after the fact, as they felt it was BMW's fault, not theirs that the change was made and it would take them hours to pull the doors apart again to do this. I tried to argue with them to no avail. This after market tint place was the one recommended to me by our BMW dealer so I need to get in there and talk to them.
It really stinks, it is not cheap to tint the windows. ---------------- I am now playing: The Alan Parsons Project - I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You via FoxyTunes |

Ordered the moleskin in anticipation of having to do this on a 2011 E92. After getting the car, I checked both doors using a wooden tongue depressor and a flashlight, and saw that both lower window sweeps are now felted in addition to the top sweep. Did not have to disassemble the door to check - but the flashlight and tongue depressor (or something like it) is a must. |

I believe it, I've already had mine in twice to replace the shoddy little clips that keep the window from rattling, when they're down and you close the door it sounds cheap and not very well put-together. |

BMW will do NOTHING to warranty this issue. They say Tint is not a factory option. If the dealer installs it they would be responsible for warranting the tint.
The only way to stop it is to get the felt. All 2008-2010 3 series need the felt. About 50% of the 2011's have factory felt. I have seen a few that don't have it. |

Damn, I've noticed these scratches for a while now and never quite knew what they were... kind of just assumed it was an error by the tint guys. Well, at least now I know, I was going to take it in to the tint company for a warranty fix

It's a super easy install. Don't let them cut your weather strips or you will get noise and water in your door panel. ALSO, make sure they don't use generic felt. That crap leaves glue on your tint and falls off.... ask me how I know!! |

i took apart my door panel today only to discover that BOTH rubber wipers had felt on them.
i have a 2010 E92, and my windows are getting scratched even though both wipers are felted. hope it doesn't ruin my tint, i just got it 2 days ago TAKE NOTE. I have 2010 3er (bought in Nov 2009) and both upper and lower wipers are felted.

Just FYI, I know there is some confusion about 2011s and e90/e92s in this thread. My 2008 e90 335i, my 2009 e90 335i and my 2011 E90 M3 all have a rubber inner seal, no felt, just like all of the other e90s. Pretty sure the e92s have a felt inner seal.

Can someone post pix of where the felt would/would not be located?

Hmmmm, I remember the earlier E92's didn't have felt. I wonder what year they started to add the felt for the coupes....
The only way to know for sure is to open up a door panel and look. It's impossible to tell with a flashlight. |

I've had window tints on my 2009 E90 sedan for three months now and not a mark. Plenty of use of electric windows too, so apparently not a problem for all cars

I don't even have tinted windows and my windows are scratched. First it was my front passenger side window, now my rear passenger side windows, and the only one left unscathed is my drivers window. I'm hoping BMW will replace the windows considering I do not have tint on them and the windows themselves are scratched up to all hell.
