Interesting E90 Base upgrade
I've been lurking and reading, and I'm looking for input.
I've picked up a 2010 328xi sedan with Base / CD Professional and want upgrade. My previous drive was a 2001 GMC Sonoma that I did an active 3-way + sub in and would like to bring some of that over if I can. From the Sonoma install I have: (2) Helix/Brax HXA 40X 4-channel amps. 4x60w rms into 4ohm, 80max. 4x90w rms into 2ohm, bridgable 2, 3, 4 channel. Input sens. 350mv - 8.5v They're real small, like 8x10" x 1.25" and have decent Xovers that can BP as well as xover into each other. (1) Illusion Audio ND10. I LOVE this thing. The drivers are all home audio type, actively run, I was on the DIYmobileadio boards a lot. Not sure if I can/want to use those. What I'd like to do: Run from this HU to an Audison Bit 10 (have coming) into a Helix (back of trunk mount?). Run a 4" comp set with 2 channels and passive xover and the underseats with the other two channels. Then, maybe use the second Helix for the ND10 in a corner trunk enclosure. You are thinking why not use the extra two channels for the tweeters to do full active? The Bit 10 only does 4 channel plus sub. The BMW is way different than the truck, but much seems similar. Is there anything I'm missing? Is there a better way to use these amps? It seems a shame to not use any of the xovers, but the DSP will be great. Still need: drivers, thinking Jehnert or Gladen set. Possibly Morel 402 with 8" something. Money is an object. Need Technics harness but not even sure what to ask for or how. |

Well, I'm afraid I can't afford the Helix DSP and those drivers, enclosure, etc. The only reason I got the Bit 10 was to scrub the HU eq and not recode it, as I've read those are the two paths. The Audison software looked good, haven't seen the Helix.
Helix made a point about a feature they had that prevents the amps from running when the stereo may be 'invisibly' on for up to 30 minutes after the car is off? I'm worried now about the Audison and that, since my truck can die after one song if its off. Hope I'm not biting off more than I can chew. Wife is already wondering why I'm 'altering' the car, she should know better by now! The Base audio is not good. |
