Heated Wing Mirrors
Got out to the car this morning and it was covered in dew. I couldn't see anything in the wing mirrors, but no worries heated mirrors right?
Well, got to the station where I leave the car, and they still hadn't cleared. Now I know on my old e46 they were on whenever the engine was on, and I assume the same is true for the e90. Got out the car, and felt the mirror glass - wasn't sure if it was slightly warm or just at ambient temp, but my e46 would have been definately warm to the touch (and probably clear). I also had the heated rear screen on as well. Can anyone in colder climes tell me if the e90 mirrors get hot?

I had the same problem. The heating of the mirrors now only occurs below a certain temperature. The manual actually states:
"At outside temperatures below a certain limit, both exterior mirrors are automatically heated while the engine is running or the ignition switched on." This is great for frosty mornings, but useless for those misty mornings here in the UK! |

Doh! I guess the moral of the story is to RTFM (Read The F...... Manual!)
Cheers guys So for extra credit - what temperature activates it?

I noticed this today with my car. Dew on the mirrors and no heating.
Went to the dealer during my lunch and discovered that it is indeed temperature dependent and according to the outside temperature - they will work at 100 75 or 25 percent of full power !!. To activate the heaters when the temperature would normally prohibit them, simply turn on the wipers and this turns the mirrors on - but if its not too cold - it will still only use part power. You only get full power if it is below 10C. Another example of how too much complication and technology can ruin something that used to work so well - just like the indicators !! Wake up BMW and stop applying technology just for the sake of it. Often it doesn't work that well |

simnew, that's the best explanation of the heated mirrors on the E90 that I've seen. Thanks! It's a question I've been asking, too.

Question to E90Fleet.
Do you know if they have made any changes to these values with newer CIPs? My car is built in march 2005 and I had the latest CIP downloaded a couple of weeks ago and since then I have a feeling that they work faster now than in previous CIP.

They only list problem fixes and not upgrades, so its hard to know when they have updates something like this

so does turning on the rain sensor count as turning on the wipers?
I find that the heated mirrors are the weak point of this car compared to older models of BMW. My dad's E30 and E46 cars defrosted the mirrors like no one's business... my E90 323i seems weak in this department (sorry to my car for speaking badly about it for the first time!) |
