Best tires for the NW
My 19" CSL reps should be arriving soon and I wanted some opinions on tires. I'm debating between all weather or summer tires. Also, debating about lower end vs. higher end tires. I'm considering Continental DWS because they look like good all weather tires that have a high tread rating, which I believe means they will last a while. I really don't want to buy tires every year or even every two years. I could also get a good deal on some Falken FK 452's from a friend. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

DWS has a 50,000 mile warranty (long life) and I can tell you from personal experience that it does extremely well on wet weather (90+ mph in a stormy rain and they didn't slip) and kinda like a low-mid-end winter tire in the snow. Performed much better than stock all season when we got that couple days of snow last year and earlier this year (was driving with a loaner car the first day, and then my car the 2nd). Climbed James St. no problem in snow, where I had to disable DTC on loaner to climb up a less steeper hill in Bellevue.

I'd be interested to know as well since my PS2 rears are about time to be swapped. Not feeling like shelling out $800+ for two tires =D. Was planning on getting DWS rears and keep the PS2 fronts until the front wear out too then get matching DWS fronts. =)

I had a set of michelin pilot sport A/S Plus tires on my E38 and they were amazing. Super sticky and they worked great in the rain. IMO summer tires aren't worth it unless you have a set of summer wheels also. All season tires are better because it rains so much anyways. Bought them from Costco for about 250-300 each.

I've been happy with my Hankook Ventus V12s and they handle fine in the rain. They didn't feel well at all in the snow this winter, but I didn't expect anything else from summer tires and 300HP RWD car. That and I was riding around in my buddy's 4WD Silverado prior so that didn't help the comparison.
Discount Tire is good about price matching. I did the same thing as you...had them pricematch TireRack. Let me know how they match it for you. The one I went to in Tacoma would only match the shipped priced of TR. So I had to pay TR's price w/ shipping cost plus WA tax. |

Should be buying tires in about two weeks when my rims get here. I'll definitely let you know how it goes. I really don't want to pay the shipping costs, but we'll see. I need to brush up on my negotiating skills before I go in there.

Okay, I have a potentially really dumb question... I see that a lot of people who get 19" rims go with 235/35/19 tires in the front and 265/30/19 tires in the rear. However, that setup means the rear wheel has a slightly smaller diameter (~0.25") than the front wheel. If you were to go with 275/30/19 in the rear, the front and rear wheel diameters would be essentially the same. So why do people choose the first option?

because for those who doesn't want to deal with any potential rubbing, 265s will do the job regardless of offset (well, unless you are going extreme)...

I just bought a set of Hankook Ventus V12s. My 2nd set, but the 1st one was on my VW Golf TDI. Do a little research on tirerack to see what rates really good, then depending on what is reasonable for you start looking at prices.
I got America's Tire/Discount Tire (the shops go under both names) to match either tirerack (+shipping) or their own discounttiredirect.com - which actually gave a better overall deal then the TR PM. Expect them to install TPMS kit which you won't know upfront until you go in the store - it's $7.50/tire. But I would NOT install all-season tires on a bimmer, jeez on my TDI I had summer perf tires and a set of traction tires for winter... |

So I decided to go with the Continental DWS. I'm not sure I understand why its such a bad idea to use all season tires on my car. Either way its too late to change my mind now, since they are sitting in my garage. I got America's Tire co to match the tirerack.com price + shipping. I ended up buying them in Portland to avoid paying sales tax and they had a promo going on, so I'll be getting a free Seattle Sounders jersey in the mail soon. So overall, I feel good about the purchase and my tire decision. Thanks for everyones advice and opinions!

Was planning to run Continental DW for my summer tire, but TireRack and DiscountTireDirect are back-ordered on the front tires.
Leaning toward Nitto Invo on all 4 corners now. Best bet is to have a summer set and a winter set.

+1 for nitto invos. Solid tires. I made it to my house from Downtown Bellevie in light snow with the invos too.
