DCT I'm sure is quality, but while I'm young I'm a manual man - too much fun!

PMSL.... you can get just as much enjoyment out of a semi-auto mate. Unless your just obsessed with having something in your hand

Don't need auto's in my life mate - I prefer something in my hand

Our running duel was a classic example - your auto had a mind of its own and kicked down without you wanting it to...

With manual, I am in full control (and won!) lol!

LOL I can appreciate that these automatics (or clutchless manuals or whatever you want to call them) are an amazing piece of engineering.

I'm 100% with Boo though.

Manual is more involving and you feel in more control. If only the E46 M3 CSL had been made with a proper manual box which would have surely been lighter, no? It would have been the greatest car BMW have ever made.

What I really don't get are these new 7 speed gearboxes, why?! As far as I'm concerned 6 is on the limit, we don't really need that but what are 7 all about on these Auto boxes?

Guys get with the program. Semi autos are faster, thats what its about. You like holding something in ya hand, go have a wank or something. Or shamzina, you hold someone elses trudgeon

An auto box is heavier than manual, A semi auto is a manual box essentially. Not an Auto. Auto has a torque converter SMG, DCT dont so wont be any heavier.

Ive had a number of E46 M3's - two with paddles and one manual - have to say that the manual was a far more engaging drive all round - however i then had a CSL and absolutely loved the auto even if it was a little harsh at times. Ive now got the 335i auto and equally love it. It is perfect for me as i spend a lot of time in heavy stop/start traffic and just couldnt do it in a manual. That said the auto box in the 335 is far from perfect and if it was just a fun weekend car i would have chosen manual every day. I also really miss being able to blip the throttle on the down shifts - especially going through tunnels!!!

I used to agree about manual, until I drove the VW Golf GTi with DSG, that was it, I was hooked. Now got the 335d and thats auto. What a shit box, I bever know what its thinking or what its planning to do next. I think it was designed to tow something. I so wish I could go manual

might have to upgrade the car to get the new DCT once it goes into the 335d

ROFL! Oh Carlos you make me laugh sometimes

I can just see your next off topic thread "So is driving better than sex" ...only if ya drive a manual haha!

Semi auto is a manual box, you know what bothers me?! The fact it has two pedals instead of three, oh and yeah they've not got a proper, erm, knob either lol!

Surely everyone gets much more pleasure out of driving a manual? If they really think long and hard about what makes a motorcar

You need for fun -
3 pedals
No PAS or other assistance

You'd like for comfort and motorway drives -
PAS and other assistance possibly coupled with an Auto / semi auto box

Auto is the luxary choice, manual is the fun choice I'll take fun everyday of the week

I'm with Porsha and Booforty. I want 3 pedals and a stick.

I don't care if a 'semi' is faster. I want a proper gearbox

im pretty sure the SMG box is stil heavier than the manual equivalent. i used to know an awful lot about my e46m3 and im pretty sure the SMG box was heavier than the manual feel free to prove me wrong tho.

on top of that i swear i can change faster than a BMW M6 ive raced a mate time and time again side by side and the gear shifts i make compared to his automated ones are quicker. i can tell from hearing the delay between his changes are noticably longer noted by the silence of his exhuast/engine between shifts... im speaking from experience, forget what the specs read. yes he was in S6 mode. My mate even agrees that his box is slow...

So the second clutch on a dual clutch transmission will not weigh anything? I would have thought that two clutches (plates and assembly) would weigh more than one clutch in a manual car - I guess logic doesn't apply in this case though.

As far as the whole 'auto is faster than manual' argument goes, I don't buy it. Although this is the case (I don't doubt it) I want driving sensation and some kind of challenge. I had DSG in my last car, and althout it was 0.3 seconds quicker to 60 and was a magnificent piece of technology I got bored with it after a year or so. A manual gearbox is much more engaging and challenging. For me, much of the sensation of speed and power comes from the wave of torque after I manually disengage the clutch after a gear change. Auto/semi-auto boxes provide a seamless gearchange and significantly reduces the sensation of speed/power - I found myself nudging treble figures all of the time in my DSG car to achieve any amount of driving sensation, whereas with my manual 335i I get this sensation way before I am breaking the speed limit. For me this is what it is all about.

My Maserati had the Cambiocorsa 'cc' gearbox on (Ferarri's automated manual - can't remember if it was a 'double' clutch though) and even thought it could be magnificant the majority of the time it was just jerky. The computer can't judge when to 'gently' engage/disengage the clutch, dependent upon traffic conditions, to smooth out gear-changes like a hand & foot can. Overall I hated it and was one main reasons for getting rid (combined with £2.5k services!!!).

I understand the VW DSG is a massive step forward however, for me, it's manual all the way.

From reading the press there are mixed opinions about BMWs DCT, some say it's more 'cc' than 'DSG' whilst others say otherwise.

The verdict is still out there...

P.S. I agree with 'Yahoo', the automated versions MUST weigh more than the normal manuals. There are masses of additional components involved.

It does not weigh crazy amounts like a auto. It will weigh not even 30kg more.

Im sure BMW will argue that its faster. As do Audi and Ferrari and whoever else.
