EGR cooler - bung or join coolant pipes

Hi there
I did an EGR and cooler delete some time ago, currently have each end of the coolant lines bunged but have seen that some join the two pipes up.
Which is the preference to do and are there pros and cons to doing one or the other?
Thanks in advance,

Just leave them bunged. There's almost zero difference. Worst I've heard is the hose joining can start to leak. However my hose has been fine for 25k miles.

I took this as an opportunity to install a coolant filter with a bleeder port.

Have you picked up anything interesting in the coolant filter?! Can't say I have seen that done before, do you recollect the pipe diameter(s) from doing this? Cheers

I run both ways on 2 different M57 engines. The first try (our 335D) on hose bypass slightly leaked like Torqu3 said. I improved that design by switching to a SS pipe setup. At that time, caps were not in existence yet.

Later, we got an X5D and I did same deletes and used the black plastic caps in the Bimmertune kit. Much more simple and gives you more room in front of engine.

The only other benefit of the SS bypass line is I support my CCV oil catch can by tie wrapping to the central 6" SS pipe of bypass. I have a plan to upgrade catch can and may likely cap the ends and remove the bypass. FWIW

I like Nadir's idea of the bleeder port. I would put a "T" in the middle of my 6" central span if I were implementing.

It's been changed once after about 10k miles, but I did not bother looking to see if the filter was doing anything. The line size is around 3/8". The extra port into the cooling system makes flushing easier.

FWIW, the coolant filters on my trucks must catch alot of cr@p, because they get changed every so often after I notice them clogged. It's pretty easy to tell - they just stop warming up.

I've not had any issues with my bypass hose leaking. I've been running this way for 18 months and probably 22K miles. But I'd personally go with what ever was easier to install. There were no plugs available at the time I removed my EGR cooler.

I have however had some issues with a slight amount of intake oil leaking out of my EGR race pipe, the ports on the side for meth seem to weep. No matter how much I tighten them. But when installing my new thermostat I was glad to have the race pipe, its so much easier to remove than the old EGR setup.

Like everyone else said. Either way works fine. I've been running a bypass hose for 30k miles. No leakage, but fitment makes all the difference.

I just installed the AARodriguez Race Pipe yesterday. Great kit and thanks to AA!!!!

However, one small observation, the bung that caps off the lower coolant port had me curious if it could eventually wear. It appeared to be a stock OE fitting with a small rubber cap on the end. Given the location it lives, down in the small recess near the water pump in a cavity low on the front of the head, I wonder if heat may eventually fatigue this small rubber cap.

However, I know there are others who have been running this for many miles, so hoping that is a positive indicator.

Is it rubber or heat shrinked rubber? Heat shrink is much stronger to heat...

I would do the caps. I originally did the bypass, but it rubbed on the belt and wore a hole through it, probably didn't tie it out of the way good enough. The caps look much better and make things easier to work on in the future. Haven't had a leak after installing them either.

I don’t have the same kit but was wondering the same as well.
