No Automatic Re-Lock?

My previous BMW (E60 530d) had an auto re-lock feature, where if you accidentally unlocked the car, but didn't open the doors, it would re-lock itself.

Yesterday I was cleaning my E92, and unlocked it unintentionally when I crouched down to pick something off the ground. I wondered if it would re-lock, but it didn't - at least not for 20 minutes that it took me to give it a quick wash. So now I'm wondering if the E92 has this feature, or not? I think it's quite useful to avoid leaving the car unlocked if you accidentally push the key fob button as you walk away from the car, putting keys away in a bag for example at the airport...

I dont have iDrive, and mine auto-relocks if you dont open a door. Relocks after about a minute I think, I'll check.

And how do you get the keys in the car without opening the door? Once the door is open the feature is disabled.

but thats the whole point of the system isn't it???

it for... if you walk away without locking the car it locks itself...
so what to stop you walking up to the car putting your coat on the back seat (forgetting your keys are still in the pocket) closing the door, and hey presto... the car locks itself... leaving you locked outside...

I tried it on mine and didn't want to risk being locked outside so disabled it...

Good idea if you NEVER leave your keys in the car by accident. If you do, your buggered!

In this example the car wouldn't re-lock itself though....

The feature re-locks the doors after a set time as long as none of the doors have been opened.

Therefore, what you're suggesting wouldn't happen - opening the door to lay your jacket on the seat would prevent the doors from re-locking themselves. The car will not lock the doors once a door (any of them) has been opened.

Ill give it a try later on... (with my spare keys on me, just incase )

the only reason Im not sure about this is because I remember my dad locking himself out of his C70... that had a feature that locked itself aswell...

As far as I remember, he unlocked the car, opened the boot, put suitcase in boot, opened suitcase to look at some papers and laid keys in suitcase, forgetting about the keys, closed the boot, didn't get in the car straight away, car then locked him out with the keys in the boot....

sounds like the BMW system has that situation solved though... just thought Id share the story though

ok so how about this situation....

you park up, stop the engine, take the keys out and lay them on the seat (could happen) then get out of the car and walk away forgetting you left the keys on the seat....

the car will still lock itself... yes?

stranded?

No. Only it you unlock the car then don't open a door or the boot, will it automatically relock.

But, you should try it to be sure.

No ... the system will ONLY lock the car if you unlock using the keyfob, but do not open the doors.

BMW had a lot of problems with people accidently unlocking cars - e.g by sitting down on the keyfob when it's in their pocket.

If this system is active, it will lock the car again if no doors are opened within a certian time.

Yes, apologies I should have RTFM ... it's called Automatic Locking, and on non-iDrive cars is set using the indicator stalk button/menu thingy. I'll give it a try later, since I think it's well worth having it enabled.

I have this option switched on my car as I have sometime walked away without locking it (after a 16hr day the last thing on my mind is to check the car - company car!)

I always have my wallet on my person never leave it in a jacket - So I always carry the flat spare key (for use with the adapter in the glovebox) in my wallet.

It comes down to personal discipline - I never leave my keys lying about but sometimes forget to lock the car so its great for me to know that the car has been locked (if the insurance company asks I can confirm it was locked!)

I am looking forward to having this autolock feature enabled on my new car!!
I have come out many mornings to my E46 to find the car unlocked and all the windows down - which is especially bad on rainy days!!!!

I always keep the keys in my pocket and the open button must get pushed and held down sometimes ( must stop wearing tight trousers )

Has this happened to anyone else?

Yep thats happened to me before.

It happened before I knew about the functionality. my colleague wondered why my windows opened when I was walking to the boot to pack my gear away.

Yes! When I'm wearing my leather trousers or leggings when leaving the gym... very annoying
