193m Staggered Tire Size?

I have a 2011 335d with stock (non-sport) suspension.

I am trying to decide what size summer tires to purchase for 193m wheels. I have decided the tires will be Continental ExtremeContact DW. I believe these tires tend to run a little wider than the competition.

Here are the wheel specs, along with OEM tire size and two alternatives I am considering:

Front Wheel:
18 x 8 ET 34

Rear Wheel:
18 x 8.5 ET 37

OEM Tires:
Front: 225 x 40 R18
Rear: 255 x 35 R18

Alternative 1:
Front: 225 x 45 R18
Rear: 255 x 40 R18

Alternative 2:
Front: 235 x 40 R18
Rear: 265 x 35 R18

I am thinking of putting either of the above alternatives on the 193m wheels. Will I have problems with either? What are the pros and cons? Finally, should I just forget about changing the size and stick with OEM size since the Continental tires are a little wider anyways?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

What is wrong with the OEM setup? You are only going to be increasing rolling resistance going larger, and likely overall weight at the corners. Just because we D owners enjoy decent MPG doesn't mean we should cause it to go down further

I can understand perhaps wanting a bit more grip in the rear due to the torque monster but unless you went aftermarket we have an open diff...you are going to spin them once in a while without a light foot. Compound will help more then size there.

I agree with bvanlieu. Stick to the OEM size unless you want to step up the wheel size. If you want more traction you can always go with a Michelin PSS tire

Thanks for the responses! I guess to clarify, part of the reason I am considering Alternative 2 is for a wider tire look, while Alternative 1 may also add some comfort. Just not sure what these alternative sizes would look like on the 193m wheel or if I would have any clearance problems with the stock suspension.

Still not decided, been doing research. It seems this thread actually recommends going up in profile, instead of wider, for better ride quality - that's my Alternative 1 above. I think I am actually leaning toward this too now ...

Hi rimlaban,

I have similar situation on my hand I have a 2008 328xi sedan. Looking at the same setup, 193m style 18" 8.0 front and 8.5 rear. Did you you ever decide on your setup ? Did you have to use any spacers ? thanks

Ah, this was actually a while ago, while I still had my 335d. I chose Alternative 2 and didn't have any issues ... hope this helps.

Alternative 2:
Front: 235 x 40 R18
Rear: 265 x 35 R18

Stick with oem sizes and get some PSS . Michelins are fatter than a lot of other brands and will give you the wider look your looking for.
