I thought some were claiming that the stock Z4 LPFP flowed as much as the Walbro 450?

It does flow good but now as much as I need it to with hybrids. I am going to give this 450 a shot to see what it can do.

LOL. 3ft was about $50.

The cheapest place that I found it was at RockAuto and they have 5/16 for about $16 a foot.

The Z4 bucket is plug and play. Remove the stock pump, replace it with the new pump and install the fuel lines. The bucket is completely different from the 335i bucket.

What is really bad with the Z4 bucket is that it installs from the bottom. That means that the exhaust and heat shield have to be removed and you have to do it with little to no gas left in the tank.

Please be careful with the gates line OP. I have yet to see a single example of it working for an extended period of time in an ethanol environment. It WILL crack, warp, slip off the fitting(s), rupture, etc.

I'd really encourage you to use PTFE line like you see in the OE setup, or the Fuel-It! setups. It's not a huge difference cost-wise and will handle ethanol without issue.

Not trying to be a nanny, just don't want your car to get stranded. I've seen numerous local members have the exact same issue.

Good luck with it. The gates line is expensive even at wholesale cost.

I was going to use some Nylon fuel line but it is such a PITA to install that I gave up. I am not sure how I would make this braided fuel line from summitracing work because all of the fittings inside the tank are barbs.

I have seen posts of fuel line failures but I haven't seen any failures of this submersible fuel line. Maybe I missed them but I could not find any. I believe that the biggest mistake that people make is that they use the wrong clamps with this hose. I actually ran this same setup for about 6 months on E50 and did not have an issue.

I would be willing to change it out if someone can tell me the easy way to install it.

That fuel line is going to fail.... Please do not install it to find out the hard way especially given the complexity of that platforms R & R....

I promise you you will be doing this job again. I am only trying to save you the headache.

My honest advice would be to purchase a STG3 Fuel-It and be done with it.

The DIY methods are so hit or miss. The OE hose is PTFE, which is made with all sorts of sheaths. You don't need to use braded line, that was just an example. What matters is the hose material; the Gates submersible will fail.

You are probably right but Steve does not offer a Stage 3 for the Z4. I actually beta tested a 450 lpfp with him and I had issues so I dropped out of the beta testing so he doesn't have a solution to the Z4. The bucket is very simple compared to the other N54 cars so I should be able to just drop a 450 in, install some fuel lines and be done with it.

I am open to ideas about how to install PTFE fuel lines if anyone has tackled it before.

Ugh, ya right as I typed that something in my head said 'Don't think Steve makes a pump for the Z4'. Bummer.

Do you have any pictures of the stock pump and line routing? I don't have experience on that chassis so I don't want to lead you astray.

Picking the right line shouldn't be too much of a challenge. More about determining how the routing is different from E8/9x to the Z4.

I will post some more pics but there is not much more to see. All of the fuel lines are visible in my first pics.

Need the lines identified as to what they are? Obviously the pump outlet is clear, but what are the other two lines? Is this for a secondary pump? If so is there a Venturi? Perhaps a quick sketched schematic would help.

I'd poke around at the Aeroquip offerings such as Startlite Racing Hose or the pureflex PTFE hose. I *think* both can be clamped or crimped (as opposed to requiring an AN fitting) and they've all been rated for ethanol and methanol. If the hose can handle methanol, it can handle ethanol without issue.

The routing/design i'm seeing doesn't look drastically different than E9/8x, maybe i'm just missing something.

If in doubt i'd reach out to either Steve AZ or Jake H and ask them specifically what lines/hoses they'd recommend. I'd be happy to reach out to Jake if that's easier to ask what hose he uses for the MOTIV port fuel lines. Obviously the size would be different but i'm pretty sure it's that Aeroquip line.

It's just key that you not use the gates hose. I think Gizm0 tried a similar approach, and ended up going with a nylon or PTFE hose after the submersible cracked and failed. When it fails it doesn't fail 'soft', you'll be stranded and that sucks.

You are correct... I tried the Gates Hoses, rated 30R10 supposedly compatible with submersed in tank applications and e85 compatible but it kept blowing up... I have blown these hoses at least 4 or 5 times before giving up on them. I am currently using a new setup designed by a fellow member lcvette , very neat setup and I have a lot of confidence in it. I'll soon make a new thread about his product, I have had it in the tank for a week now and over 1000 miles and it's holding up strong.

Here is a link to his youtube page where you can see how he designed his fuel pump. The quality of the product is amazing.

Here is a link to my thread with the same approach as OP's... Many failed experiments in there
