Pilot Sport 2 ZP (runflat) review - finally a good RFT

Just had these installed on my 07 335i sport on the stock rims. This is only an initial review and I will update when I get some chance to explore the handling abilities. Please note that I had the stock Bridgestone RFTs for the first 12k miles, then put on the Goodyear Eagle F1 Allseasons (non RFT) on for the winter so I am coming directly from those. These are the BMW spec (have the little BMW star on the sidewall) Michelin PS2 Zero Pressure tires:

Ride: WAY better thank the Bridgestones, less rolling resistance and much less impact harshness. Also, that jiggle like feeling that the stones had (same feeling as inflating regular tires to max PSI) is now gone. On the interstate they just glide along. Compared to the Goodyears they do have a every so slight harsher impact (barely noticeable) but still have a smoother overall ride (the Goodyear’s had a noticeable grumble between 15-35 mph that you could feel.)

Noise: Absolutely silent on asphalt and very very little noise on concrete. Quieter than the Bridgestone’s and MUCH quieter than the Goodyear’s.

Handling: Will report on this after a few days (unfortunately the next 2 will be in the 40's). I thought the bridgestones were very good in this area, but I expect these tires to have better grip.

Other: these tires are heavier than both their non RFT counterparts and the stock Bridgestones. The rears are 29 lbs, the fronts 24 lbs compared to the stock stones at 26 lbs rear/25 lbs rear. Strange how the Michelins are lighter than stock in the front size, but heavier in the rear. Not sure how this will affect acceleration.

Also a note on their availability, I called michelin before I snagged these off of ebay and they have none in stock or reserve (rear size 255/35/18) and do not have a production run scheduled till at least mid May.

Will update on handling soon. . .

Seems The Tire Rack has these specified in 18" size as OEM tires when selecting an E92 with sports package. Has anyone gotten these new with their 3-series optioned out with sports package and 18" wheels - and not the Bridgestones?

I am wondering if I can have my ED order specify these instead of the Bridgestones

It appears that a very very small percentage of E9X owners have seen these as their OEM tire. I cannot quantify the exact percentage but my dealer says that about 1 out of every 15 E9X have them. They first appeared sometime in NOV/DEC 07.

Unfortunately you cannot specify what tire your car will come with, even with ED. Whatever is delivered to the factory is put on your car. E46's had three potential tires (Michelin PS (original not PS2), Dunlop 8080E's and Contisports). It was, and still is, a tire lottery.

I had my 3rd set of PS2 ( non RFT ) on my E46 they were great and looking forward to hear the result on these PS RFT from Michelin. Tirerack had them for sale and these tires are not cheap.

Update: Took the car out for a long drive, mostly backroads and some interstate to take advantage of our 80 degree day here.

This tire will take all of you pre(conceived) notions regarding the harshness and ride of RFT and throw them out the window. I still cannot get over how smooth the ride is. This can now rides smoother than it did with non runflat all seasons that just came off. Also, this is one VERY quiet tire.

As far as the handling; sticks like glue! steering response and on center feel is exceptional. While I think the Bridgestones had a slightly(very slightly) quicker turn in, the PS2 does not have the 'nervousness' that was associated with the bridgestone that required those constant steering inputs.

I am still playing with the tire pressures, as I have really not had a chance to get a good cold pressure reading (too busy enjoying the drive).

Bottom line, for those of you like me who did not prefer the bridgestones, but still want RFT capability for whatever reason your prayers have been answered by Michelin. It is a damn shame that for whatever reason they are doing very limited production runs on this tire and have already sold out of the rear size.

I will keep posting my thoughts on the tire with each passing day until people stop asking for input.

I won the tire lottery on my recently delivered E92. I like the Michelin's but have no experience with other 335 tires. I second all the OP's comments and will add that I had some road debris thrown in my path that i hit hard enough to bend the wheel but no damage to the tire.

I just priced a set of four Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 ZP for my '06 330i at TIRERACK.COM and the price was $1264. The price did not include tax, road hazard warranty or shipping & handling. Front $261-each (225/40ZR18) and rear $371-each ( 255/35ZR18). The rear tires are out of stock though

spoke with michelin directly about the rear sizes, not only are they out of stock nationwide, but they have none in reserve (a tire company typically keeps about 12-15 tires in a reserve to support people who need a replacement). The rep also said that there is no scheduled production for the next two months for this tire. It may be late May before we see the rear sizes in stock.

yeah, they are pricey. any word from people who have had them on treadlife? i dont mind paying the extra if i can get good mileage out of them (which might be too much to expect---sounds like they are very grippy and soft compound)....as a reference point, i have 28k on my original OEM 330i sport package RFTs)

Just replaced my E90 wheel set with 189 rims & Bridgestone RFT ( got a good deal 1500 miles only ) and so far really please with quality of the 18" setup, but for the next replacement I would go with Michelin PS2 RFT for a higher mileage tires.

what almost everyone would describe as a more comfortable ride, although we noted the C350 did transmit more tire noise over rough pavement than the 335i. This might be due to the differences between the Continental ContiSport Contact3 tires of the Mercedes and the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires of the BMW.
From Edmunds report. Potenzas quieter than Contis?

i looked at these before replacing my bridgestones, primarily because i was so happy with the non RFT version on previous cars. i will be going the aftermarket route rim, so i am doing non RFT now, but when i was looking tire rack had them for almost 100 more a piece over the crappy bridgestone RFT's.
i was shocked.
