I thought bmw's don't use sensors... they monitor tire pressure via tire rpm...?

As I understand it, there are apparently 2 different systems used. The 335i uses a sensor and a special tire valve. This is different from that used on previous 3 series wheels.

How much do the sensors cost for the E92? I don't think that I would unmount all four tires on my stock wheels to remove them for the new wheels.

You don't have to change any sensors on the E90 (August 2006) do you ? I just ordered some wheels... I thought a simple reset of the tire monitor in iDrive was enough...

To clarify, it isn't a 335i thing, it's a E90/92 thing:

E92 = sensors ("tire pressure monitoring system" monitors actual tire pressures)

E90 = no sensors ("flat tire monitor" monitors tire rotation speed via ABS system)

I think we've heard that in 2008 all BMWs with RFTs will have TPMS.

An easy way to determine which type you have is too look at the tires valve stem.

FTM has a rubber valve stem.
TPM has an aluminum fully threaded valve stem with a nut against the rim.
It is my understanding that all cars will soon (if not already) have the TPM system.

i just picked up style 197's from a e92 owner... the valve stem is rubber and he was also notified that there aren't any tpms in the wheels...

maybe it's for 335i's?

Theres a little bit of info in this post you might be able to use for pricing on sensors and stems:

Now I'm more confused. My 335i coupe has the rubber valve stems ... in fact they're identical to the ones on my 2004 Z4. That would indicate that my coupe has the FTM, not TPM technology. Is this a US vs Cda difference?

The Z4 is definitely a rotation sensing FTM type system.
