Looking at a Used 2008 N54 modded - need advice

These are the engine mods listed in the ad:

-JB4 G5 ISO w/ USB cable.
-Dual Cone Intakes
-VRSF 3.5" Exhaust
-VK Catless Downpipes
-ER Chargepipe w/ Tial BOV and Meth Bung
-BMS Integrated 2.2 Gallon Methanol Injection Kit
-BMS Oil Catch Can

it has 80k miles.

With no warranty, is this a timebomb? Or?

What additional questions should be asked?

The ad also states "I only use Shell or Chevron 93 octane fuel, along with a bottle of Techron fuel system cleaner every other tank.. It gets an oil change every 6k using BMW Performance Synthetic and an OEM filter. It just got new spark plugs, water pump, and a thermostat at 81,714 miles. It has a clean bill of health from BMW"

Lastly, I live in ATL and we have emissions, will the JB4 G5 built in DPFIX pass emissions?

thx.

So you have an '11 335 but you are looking to buy an '08 with 80k miles? To me, that doesn't sound like a good idea. 80k miles is a lot for a modded 335.

I would ask if it has had valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket replaced or if there are any leaks from these areas. Also, has it been walnut blasted?

Here is the ad, he is asking $27k OBO

Up for sale/trade is my 2008 BMW 335xi E90. It's in great condition, and has every option available from the factory, except for Comfort Access. It has navigation, heated seats, sport package, premium package, etc. It is black on black. It's an automatic, with paddle shifters, sport leather interior, and has just over 80k miles. It will run high 11's/low 12's in the 1/4 mile at this power level, but has never been ran on the track. It is the AWD model, which are extremely rare and hard to find. Gets around 25 MPG city, 31 MPG highway. I only use Shell or Chevron 93 octane fuel, along with a bottle of Techron fuel system cleaner every other tank.. It gets an oil change every 6k using BMW Performance Synthetic and an OEM filter. It just got new spark plugs, water pump, and a thermostat at 81,714 miles. It has a clean bill of health from BMW of Montgomery. Here are the modifications:

-JB4 G5 ISO w/ USB cable.
-Dual Cone Intakes
-VRSF 3.5" Exhaust
-VK Catless Downpipes
-ER Chargepipe w/ Tial BOV and Meth Bung
-BMS Integrated 2.2 Gallon Methanol Injection Kit
-BMS Oil Catch Can
-AA 5" Black FMIC
-KW V1 Coilovers
-Vorschlag Camber/Caster Plates
-AG ZCP 19" Wheels w/ Custom Black Chrome Powdercoat
-Hankook V12's
-Full M-Tech Body Kit
-M3 Side Skirts
-Black Grills
-Corner Delete Mod
-Coding
-M3 Taillights
-Interior LED Kit
-License Plate LED Kit
-LED Angel Eyes
-LED Corner Lenses
-LED Side Markers
-4300k HID Foglights
-Carbon Fiber Wrapped Interior Trim
-30% Tint

Listen for the wastegate rattle and see if it is throwing a 30FF code at WOT. If it has this, take it to a BMW dealership SUPER fast. Warranty is up at 82k and they are stupid strict with it.

Two new turbos right off the bat is a tough pill to swallow if you are paying for it yourself.... Been there... Done that...

I asked about the valve cover and oil filter and walnut blasting, but until then, this was a response on other questions I had:

The mods have been installed for approximately 15k. I am not the original owner. It has been in two minor fender benders. CarFax says it has additional value because of the service records.

Turbos and HPFP were not recalled, they simply extended the warranty on them. I have not had any issues out of either. Injectors were replaced in under the injector recall.

Sounds like the previous owner took well care of the car. Like the others said check the turbos before anything so you can try to get them swapped the warranty is out.

Personally, i wouldnt pick the car up because i like to modify my own car and would want to buy one with parts already on as that would be less things to work on. =D

This ^^^ I wouldn't say it is a ticking time-bomb but you are almost at the max mileage for coverage under the turbo/wastegate extended warranty (8yr,82k mi). The HPFP is also 10yrs/120k mi. It's worth a shot if the price is low enough for and you understand you might have to pay for NEW turbos in the future. I emphasize might b/c know one knows when these things go out. Listen to see if you can hear the wastegate rattle. Maybe the dealer would be willing to replace it now under warranty if you can hear it, but some wont until you throw codes. Last, confirm if the water pump has been replaced in addition to the trans fluid. GL!

thanks everyone.

he did state he just got a new water pump and thermostat. Dealer inspection at 81900 miles...so it is over 82000 miles now. you would 'hope' if there were codes or rattle the dealer would have dealt with it...

I also like to mod cars, but if I find one well done and a good deal, I jump on it. Like the ad says, there is probably $15k in mods in this car. I would not buy one for $20k and put in $15k...when I could get it all for $24k

$27k is about right....

I paid $21k for my '07 e90 with 82k miles and it looks like he's got at least $6k in mods after depreciation.

Damn, I would unload my 09 m-sport lemans blue e90 for not much more than his asking price with similar mods and only 30k with a CPO....food for thought.

more comments:

I haven't had any issues since owning it. I cleaned the intake valves myself.

I've had it since February. I did most of the mods.

Meth kit hasn't ever been installed. It's brand new in the box.

Throws no codes. It's just over 82k. Even if it did, they wouldn't replace the turbos anyways unless you had a major problem and returned it to stock before taking it in.

So it's an 08 with 80k, modded, and it's been in a couple accidents? IMO I would NOT buy that thing. You could get an 09/10 with half the miles for that price.

Similar mods? I see some 2009 e90s out there basically stock for high 20s...with less than 80k miles certainly. But the mods are worth something. As I stated, the KBB is $20k.

$24k could be a more magic #.

here is a pic of the car:

FWIW I just picked up an 08 E90 335 Msport, fully loaded, 75K milage for 13K cash. I wanted white with the brown interior and a stick. Owner put car back to stock as I want to do my own mods. Just keep looking you can find a better deal.

a few cars to look at. Even with shipping one some of these cars its still a better deal since the mileage is low. Carmax also has extended warranties. I bought one through them since i got an e93 and wouldnt want to end up paying a ton for a top repair. If you dont want a sedan just change the search a little.

http://www.carmax.com/enus/search-re...b-e7249a28d92e

This one is very similar and is a year newer for much cheaper.

http://www.carmax.com/enus/view-car/...b-e7249a28d92e

Shoot, you can get a vert for less.
http://www.carmax.com/enus/view-car/...f-99ee1e21b857

More verts.

Personally I wouldn't even consider a second owner car with someone else's choice of mods but that's just me. I wouldn't trust that anyone, let alone 2 anyone's cared about how the car was run and maintained.

You said KBB was $20k (hard to imagine for a 2 accident '08 with 80k miles) so you really think you should pay KBB + $7k for his mods? Most of the list of mods is cheap stuff.

Wasting hours choosing mods and making the car your own is 90% of the fun of it! Buy something with less miles and less baggage and do it yourself!!
