retro-fit front isofix?
is it possible?
Kid number 2 is due next month (god-willing) and without going into too much detail (as I'm knackered and want to go to sleep), this is one option that I'm considering if it's feasible. Advice, comments, suggestions welcome. Thanks - Aky |

Congrats on new incoming babby!
I thinks its possible but expensive to retro fit isofix. Have you got the option to disable your airbag? If not that will be expensive to retro fit, if at all possible.

Technically it is possible. You would however need to strip them down completely, dismantle them, then install the Isofix bracket (part number 52107129838) with fillister head screws (07147144879 and 07147144880). A retrim of the seat would then be required to allow for the Isofix mounting points. It's a fair amount of work and won't be that cheap. Also, I doubt many dealers would do it, because of the potential legal liability issue...

Mate had it done in a Z4 this yr and they also fit airbag deactivation key.
About £400 all in from memory.

They fit quite nicely in the boot under the floor.

(Thought of doing it myself using the parts that E92fan mentioned and prob wouldnt bother with re-trimming of the seats as the rear seats dont have the cut-out but am still using ISOFIX. The only thing that worried me was being able to fit the airbag deactivation switch etc) One more question: anyone know whether you have to have the airbag de-cativated if you put a front-facing infant ISOFIX seat? Thanks again - Aky |

Yes, an airbag can potentially kill an infant.

I thought children under 11 or some age like that, weren't allowed in the front passenger seat?

He had it done at Vines of Guildford. I will try to catch up with him tomorrow and find the exact details, contact, etc. I know he has the airbag deactivation but must check he had the isofix done as well.

I don't have the part number to hand - it's only available on the BMW ETK system which I can access tomorrow. From memory, I think the switch panel was about £350 + VAT, because it isn't just a switch panel, but a complete control module as well. It's all moulded together.

We had a baby in September and I asked the same thing for my 330i E90. The facelift E90 series has front isofix as standard, on the 1st gen E90 3 series it wasn't available AT ALL as an option, so it cannot be fitted on 1st gen seats i was told? BS? Was it a cost option on the E92? - this may mean you can do it. I think the airbag would need to be off for any infant seat, rear or front facing (not seen forward facing?) because they are so close to the dash and would be forced upwards if the airbag went off. |

'Strip them down completely' is what I'd like to understand better: it seems that lifting two flaps of upholstery on the back should do the trick. Do you know if the upholstery or the stitching has to be cut or altered for allowing access to the isofix bracket? Also if anyone has them installed on the passenger seat either retrofit or aftermarket, can you please post pictures from the lower rear of the passenger seat, possibly showing how the bracket is mounted and optionally from the front (with isofix hooks visible) |
