I've thought about this before and what I came up with and would like to see would just be another factory sized oil cooler on the driver side.

Keep in mind that BMW wants this engine to run hot. IMO we just need to make sure that once it gets to 250, the oil cooler is big enough to keep it from going any higher.
What are the reasons they want to run it that high?

But in terms of emissions efficiency right? Actual power output doesn't go up, nor do engine or oil longevity. Agree?

The engine has better thermal efficiency at higher temps, so technically id does affect performance. another reason BMW wanted to run the engine hot is so any carbon deposits on the intake valves would burn off. This didn't work perfectly but in comparison to the VW/Audi engines we have A LOT less buildup. We lose ~10Hp every ~30-60K, The RS4's (V8) lose up to 100HP in 30K!

I will easily be able to test both configurations so I think I'll do that.

Thanks!

Have you seen JMARS setup? He is running his in conjunction with the stock oil cooler with the stock thermostat removed.

I've considered doing it like JMARS, i just hate to block the radiator because water/coolant cooling is as important in my book.

yeah I feel the same way (about blocking the IC- I think blocking the radiator is a bit less of a concern).

For now, I am looking at replacing the factory cooler. I may consider other mounting and plumbing solutions later if it makes sense to.

Blocking other heat exchangers does not make any sense. It does not only block the cool air flow, but releases its heat right into them.

If you can't make the solution, i'm gonna bite the bullet and go with ER.
I need to quit procastinating lol.

Update: all the various parts came in today (sitting at the office at home, I'm still at work), so I'm pretty excited about that.

On the flipside though, it seems my car is drinking too much oil for its mileage, so I will be taking her in for under-warranty checkup before I crack the oil system. Hopefully it's something minor, but it could be turbo seals. I will know soon enough, I hope.

So, I won't be able to get to the bracket fabrication as soon as I'd like to, but I can still start some concept drawings and talk to a buddy with a CNC/fab shop about ideas.

i didn't mean to rush you, I'm just getting itchy lol.
2013 track season start next month for me, and I'd love a working oil cooler.

No worries - didn't take it that way at all! Just wanted to make sure you know my car's current situation. It's making me have to miss the first track day of the season!! But it *will* get done!

^^^Do you plan to fab a mount that moves the cooler forward like Advan to maximize air flow?

Did you figure out what's causing the oil leak?

At the advice of my stealership I've been keeping an eye on the oil levels and they haven't dropped again yet. Given my high traffic commute they said they have seen up to a quart consumed every 1k miles so I'm not sure if I have a leak. I've started mocking up templates for the core support, and this weekend I hope to get a draft design ready for fabbing. Then I will test fitment and see what tweaks are needed. After I get the system actually functional I will put some energy into louvered back panel and a ducting system if I feel it's needed.

I've got most of the parts I will need other than the minor mounting bolts at whatnot, but I'll jut go to my local Lowe's for that after I have the mounts fabbed up.

My first trackday of the year is in late March so I hope to have it buttoned up by then. I will also have my Quaife installed by then, and if I have time I'll do a brake duct retrofit using the stock splash shields. If I succeed in that, I'll make sure to post a DIY for that too.
