guess i'll update as well...

52k 325I.

Classic yellow warning followed immediately by red temp icon. Topped off coolant twice, temp icon did not return. Forward 2 days later on the way to work on the highway service engine soon light came on. Fan has been running extremely hard and loud.

Got the following quotes on parts from friend at the stealer.

$376.32 for Electric water pump
$80 for the Therm.

I also need a new battery, didn't ask about that, but im guessing once all said and done and for him to do the work i'll be upwards of 1k.

Not sure if I'm going to fix or trade at this point, just put a few hundred into it last week for maintenance.

Paid $1240. for water pump installed on 2007 328i 50k miles. Independent shop. Plus $80 tow.

Plus the shop killed the bluetooth connection so had to go back & tell them to fix it. They claimed coincidence & I claimed Bull S%%T and they fixed it no charge.

German cars NE durability/reliability.

I changed mine at 155,000 miles so you might be ok. I inspected my pump and the impeller was a little loose so it probably wouldn't have lasted much longer. I plan on changing the pump im my wife's 530 and 100k miles.

Thanks Rich. I feel a little better now but with these pumps, man they can fail at anytime. I already started looking around for a new one just in case. I am already at 100k and no symptoms at all. I changed my plugs over the weekend that was fun. Car feels much smoother and more responsive. Did you change it yourself or went to a shop, if so how much did you pay?

Water pump failed

Hey guys, many of your postings are exactly what I experienced yesterday on my 2009 335i. Luckily it happened just before I was getting on the highway. I was amble to limp along for 3 miles and was able to barely make it to the BMW dealership. Damn that sucked. Anyway they checked it out and said it was the water pump. Cost $1200 and change installed. Damn that really sucks since I am out of warranty at 77k miles. Anyway, I hope not too many other things start going wrong. Thanks for the info.

In Canada, new waterpump installation is a std work price from BMW dealers, like a oil change. It cost 671$ + tx on a N52

I think my water pump just went out as well. Amber followed by red overheating icon on navi prompting me to pull over. Open the hood, not too hot but seems coolant sprayed/boiled over. Wait a bit to drive home and car is in limp mode.

Can there be any other plausible explanation to this other than waterpump? What are some of the tests I can run myself to get a better understanding of the issue? Will indy shops charge significantly less than the dealership?

Thanks!

*I can't seem to start my own thread until mod approves me. Any ideas how long it takes? I want to get some insight on my issue before taking the next step*

It's the pump, no doubt about it.

My 06 330i w/105K just overheated. Luckily in town near an independent shop I've used before so drove in and left it with them to check out. Be nice if it wasn't the pump but it probably is. I'll post results/cost when I know them.

I'm on my 3rd pump but I think the second one died because multiple dry runs. The dry runs were caused by a blown head gasket.

Yea, its more than likely the water pump. How many miles do you have?

You should NEVER drive with an overheated car. You have a chance of blowing the headgasket, which is an even pricier repair. I recently had the same problem at 106k. This is one of the major repairs needed for the n52.

You can buy the T-stat/pump combo from tischer for a little less than $500 and hopefully you have an indy who can do the work for you for rather cheap.

i had a buddy of mine do it for $700 and some change including parts and labor and I believe I got lucky, as I have seen countless people saying they spent $1000+ on it.

Best of luck, if you are near NY shoot me a PM

Mine went out just before 70k. I was going to do it myself, got the parts online water pump/tstat for $553 including shipping. Found out my indy shop wanted only $240 for labor. They did a great job Saved me a fair bit by not going to the dealer.

Canadian price for W-pump + Thermostat + Labour + all taxes and fees should be no more than $950 from a BMW dealer.

Mine failed at 110km and got it done within a few hours for less than a grand. (N52)

'06 330i, ~72K. Mine went out slowly. It started with a heater that wouldn't seem to get hot until the car had been running for 15 minutes or so. Then the yellow overheat warning light started coming on just before the heater kicked in (once the heater became warm, the light went out). Then one day the heater took a really long time to get warm. The yellow light came on and then the red one. As I started to pull over, the heater got warm and the light went out. I took it in to my indy guy at that point and he diagnosed a bad water pump (or at least one that wasn't communicating with the computer system). ~$1100 for pump, t-stat, labor, etc. Painful.
