Parts List for Double Din

Hey all,

I'm planning on upgrading my stock unit to a double din pioneer.

Things I need to buy still (and research the part numbers):
Harness for Steering Wheel Controls (Part?)
Harness for PDC (Part ?)
Bezel for double din, screen on bottom, climate control flush
New Climate Control unit

Dash Unit (still have to pick)
Want something that works with 7" Navigation (google preferred), Android, USB, Bluetooth, SD Card, and DVD (or better).
Pioneer AVIC-Z150BH
Sony XAV-701HD
3rd option?

After some thread searching, I'm getting mixed info on what I'll need.
I have a 328i, HiFi, No nav, No bluetooth.

Garage List
2008 BMW M3  [8.00]
2007 BMW 323i  [8.50]
I installed a Pioneer Avic X920BT in my E90, base audio.
My installer acquired all the parts, so I'm not sure of any part numbers. He used my existing climate controls, and got a bezel and harness from Metra that seems to be working just fine.

A couple of things to note:
- If you have heated seats, you will need to buy some sort of module to control them that mounts in the ashtray area.
- The "constant" power in the harness used was only constant for 30 mins after car shut off. Not a True Constant. There are posts on here that show where you can get a TRUE constant power feed from.
- The switched power will be controlled by the Start/Stop button. This annoyed me, and I ended up searching to find a switched wire that would work on key fob entry into the key slot.

Look around for the posts to help you with the points above, if you can't find info on points 2 and 3, let me know and I can help. Hint: look through the threads I've posted to.

Parts you'll need.

Dash harness-Metra 70-9003
http://www.amazon.com/Metra-70-9003-...=metra+70-9003
Dash Kit-Metra 95-9306B
http://www.amazon.com/Metra-95-9306B...m/B00322FGSO/2
Couple of add a fuses for constant and switched power sources- http://www.amazon.com/Bussmann-BP-HH...rds=add+a+fuse
Axess ASWC-1-
http://www.amazon.com/Axxess-ASWC-1-...=axxess+aswc-1

That should be about it. If you want to go really clean you can buy some Fakra connectors and a crimping tool to crimp on the ends of your aftermarket Nav and Sirius antennas, then plug them into the factory antenna connections in the trunk. Blue for Nav, and Pink for Sirius.

Take a good read of this thread here as well.

Or if you dont want to spend $200 on a piece of plastic. You can get this for $15 or even free with a headunit depending on where you get it. I honestly think the metra kit looks better since the headunit is at least in the right spot.

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1209593...eiver-Kit.html

Here is another option for a headunit. If you get it off crutchfield you get almost everything you need to install it. You still need something for the steering wheel controls though.

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-bPCzjv1...NE-S920HD.html

Im guessing you have heated seats since you said you need a new climate control. If you get the headunit from crutchfield you get the relocation kit for free to move the heated seat controls to the ashtray. Not the cleanest option but it works. If youd rather have the new climate control, look in the for sale section or on ebay.

Thank you for the great replies.

I was curious, is there benefit with going with the Metra harness in opposition to:
http://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/conne...l#.UgqFLj_3Pvk

This supports both the PDC & Steering controls. i would have to get it shipped from the UK to USA though.

You don't really have to relocate the head unit, but if you have bmw assist you'll need to relocate for that to work. You might also lose your door chimes if you don't relocate, but some earlier models have a seperate speaker for that in the dash. Also if you don't relocate the head unit you'll need to reinstall it if the dealer needs to do any software updates so save it just in case.

I found this on ebay.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/BMW-3-Series...1ba06c&vxp=mtr

It's a little pricey though I got one on here a while back for about $70 I think.

Ordered everything! Including the HVAC you posted. They're surprisingly hard to find these days.

I don't have BMW assist, my car is very base in terms of features.

Now to find a good installer... I'll post pics once it's done

Then it probably wouldn't be worth the effort to relocate the stock head unit. Just make sure you save it just in case.

You should consider DIY, its a fairly simple job. Good luck, cant wait to see how it comes out.

Also have you considered installing a backup camera?

I'm seriously considering installing one.

how much more would it cost? saw the pioneer one, but not sure how clean it would look.

Here is one.

They also make cameras that mount where your license plate lights go. But the trunk handle camera's are closer to being centered.

I was thinking about getting a pioneer one, with the assisted parking feature (lines on the screen). I had that in my G37, and I really liked it.

Edit:
After looking around, that seems pretty expensive...

Maybe I'll settle for something that's 480 lines (or more), with a wide angle.

Stupid question,

but Where does this go....
and for some reason, I feel like I'm missing some things to get my harness to connect to my head unit.

Seems like everything is RCA...

What headunit did you get? Generally they don't come with RCA's for the speaker outputs. You either have to convert the wires on that black plug that go to the stock plug behind the dash, to RCA so you can plug them into the head unit harness. Or you have to order the normal harness that comes with the aftermarket unit that just has regular wire for your spreaker hook ups.

Pioneer: AVIC Z150BH
Harness: Connects2 CTSBM006 - but it doesn't look like the one in the picture, nor the installation guide. I may have been sent the wrong cable?

It appears like that harness is pre built to piggy back your stock head unit into the equation.

The part I don't see from the picture is where you wire in your aftermarket HU harness? Or are you supposed to still get the Metra harness and splice that to the aftermarket HU harness and then plug it into that Connects2 harness?

So the harness was plug and play or what did you have to do?
