AE DRL's

basically you would follow this DIY but instead of connecting to the footwell light, you would connect to the cig lighter, which is 12V constant as long as the key is turned.

That's an E60. Have you personally done this on an E9x platform?

it's actually an E64 but they are virtualy the same as the E60. E9x should be the same concept since the wiring isn't much different

First pic is a quick diagram. (I believe the E9x AE already come on when unlocking the car right? then you would just leave out the part with the footwell and go straight from the cig lighter socket to the AE's

Second pic is the 12V outlet for the passenger side cig lighter socket. Tap into the green and black (12V) then bring it across to the drivers side and tap into the already existing wire that runs to the AE's.

Checked everything and it works great. unlock turns on AE's. Turn ignition and AE's become DRLs. You have to make sure to follow the connecting points as i pointed out in my diagram including the diodes.

passenger side cig lighter socket tap needs a diode that has to go after the diode from the footwell light.

if you want tail lights etc. then you need to tap before the diode from the footwell light.

sounds simple enough - although i have one question -
E90 pre-LCI already has DRLs (i think?) so why can't we just tap that to the AE? is the DRL not at 12v?

Go to Radio Shack and get a Diode Part #:276-1102 , get 20 gauge wire and hook it up to headlight wire # 1 and run it inside the car to footwell wire tap it.. do it like it says in the pdf file.

there seems to be a problem, the torx screws for the footwell module are unbelievably tight. is there any way to remove it without stripping the screws?

well i got time to take pics here they go.. this is my diy

1. Wire tap head light with 20 gauge wire and connect it to number 1 Black/green wire.

2.run the wire a little ways maybe 2 ft and then connect the diode(make sure which way the band is faceing. make sure its faceing forward.

3.run it with the other wires and zip tie it.

4. make sure the hood latch dont cut the wire..

5. this is where i messed up i ganna rewire mying (it work but looks ulgy) put the wire thougt that rubber boot.

6.remove the 3 screws

7. wire tap it to the foot well light and tap it to the red/blue wire.

8. put it back and the left side should work! if not make sure u push the wire taps very tight!

now do it for the right side! here are pics for the right side...

1. This time use the blue / black wire

2. remember the diode stripe faces torad the front of the car.

3. Use the rubber boot i did it this way because i was lazzy but im ganna fix it

4. remove only the 2 screws

then tap it to the red/ blue wire and there you go you all done! this is how it sould look like !

i am going to try to do it without going into the engine compartment because the lighting cables are fed into the foot well area. locating the right wire will be a problem

I did this tonight as per k3m0-330i's picture above but I'm getting an error for my right parking lamp. I think you need a diode in between the headlights....I'll be wiring that in tomorrow. BTW, the error only comes on when I switch the lights on...in any setting except off.

OP, this feature is called "Welcome Lights" not DRL or Daytime Running Lights.

Love it!! So cool. I was always jealous of the welcome lights on newer models. Did you just connect the 2 headlights together and then tap that wire, put the diode in, then run it to the footwell light? Btw what headlights do you have? I have adaptive xenons with weisslitch led angel eyes.

OP, I now see that your idea of connecting to the cigg lighter would be considered DRLs. But the way k3m0-330i and myself did it,is welcome lighting.

this allows you to run AE as DRL (alternative to Daeos kit?) when driving or just welcome lights?
