Exclamation JB4 G4 Board vs. G5 Board

Looking into getting a used JB4 Tune with the G5 Board I will only be doing the DCI (already installed) and Tune.

Should I get the G4 board or the G5 board Tune?

The normal JB4 with ur mod is fine. G5 is for those who want to run meth and bigger turbos at one point or another. Even fill nolt on guys are taking advantage of the G5 board to max out their stock twins.

If you can get the G5 board, get it!!
You will benefit from it even if running on stock turbos.

Isolated boost is comign out for the G5 which is gonna be great. Boost is controlled completely by the JB4 and not through the DME. Snappier boost, more consistent and controlled.

On top of that, the G5 gives you unlimited boost, no OHM's to play with, and you get a built in speed limiter defeat.

Along with No lift shift, 2 step limiter among other things.

So Yes, its worth it even for no FBO guys. SLD, NLS, 2 step, isolated boost just somethings everyone can use.
PLus its gonna have all the goodies that will come out down the road, so G5 is a no brainer.

so the G5 it is! what do u mean by no lift shift? also no 2 step? Will I get all the features from the G4 and more? Are the maps on the G5 the same as the G4? BTW just gonna have DCI and Tune...NOT gonna go FBO.

How can you tell the differences between G4 and G5 both physical and electronic wise?

If you purchase a used G4 board, you either get 1) a 17.5psi limit 18ohm board, or 2) a 19.5psi limit 15ohm board. It depends on production dates, or if the original owner did a 18ohm to 15ohm modification.

5soko gave the best reasons for getting a G5 board. Add to that, the G5 also had built-in CPS module.

Exterior appears to be the same. The electronic's inside are substantially different. Pics are on www.N54tech.com

The isolated boost is awesome....makes my car go crazy lol!! The sld wires are actually separate but take 10 mins to install. g5 handles PWM a lot better also.

The G5 includes a lot more features as has been mentioned but they are mainly intended for more heavily modified cars. For tune only type cars I think the main appeal with the G5 will be its new isolated boost control system. It features stronger and more linear throttle response and improved boost targeting. That aspect will benefit tune only and heavily modified cars alike. It's in ALPHA now but when it gets through to BETA I'll throw up a post here with more information on it. Until then here is a quote from the other forum explaining a few of the differences.

Quote:
The isolated control effectively disconnects boost management from the
DME completely. Allowing the JB4 to independently control boost and
throttle. And in doing so we're able to deliver snappier, more linear,
and perfectly predictable boost targeting response across a much wider
range of conditions. We're no longer forced to work around the DME
duty cycle limits and throttle logic. Which means we can implement our
own more performance oriented logic.

The integrated control scheme we've been using since the JB4 was
released is fairly extensively developed and generally works very
well. But with only a few weeks of development the isolated setup is
showing it's potential by pulling ahead in terms of precision,
consistency, and most measurable boost control categories. As a result
we're seeing an improved "driver enjoyment" rating from customers
testing it. So I expect in the coming months iso control will
completely replace the integrated control as far as the G5 board goes.

Okay so on this topic then...

From what I understand its all about production dates of the board?

I got my PNP around jan/feb 2012 from a previous member who had probably purchased it mid 2011. Do I then have a G4 board or G5 board?

If I have a G4 board....should I send to Terry to modify or just sell and buy a "newer" JB4.

Plus, none of the current maps allow boost up to 19.5psi anyways...Map5 targets 16psi max. Does that mean I need to find a tuner to use Map 6 and target what I want? I'm currently FBO and would love to hit another 3.5psi lol

Honestly I see no reason to go with the JB4 G5 unless you run meth or RB's. I actually like having a boost limit set because I (personally) feel uncomfortable going 18+ psi on stock snails.

map 5 on the G5 can hit up to 20...I hit 18+ all day long...I am FBO minus meth on stock snails.

You most definitely have a G4 board. Depending what you're boosting, you might even have the older 18 ohm board if the previous owner didn't update the resistor to the more current 15 ohm upgrade.

If you do get the G5 board, be aware that you might have to do wire swapping also. It's really going to depend how old your JB4 is. Newer JB4's (1-2years old, give or take) are a direct plug and play for the basic G5 board. Below will explain how to check if you'll need to do anything.

From Terry's G5 thread on his forum:
"The G5 plugs in to the same JB4 harness, although those using older harnesses may need to swap around wires ............ We don't have notes on when we started orienting them in the current proper configuration but we think it was around 2010. Harnesses that don't have a white connector, or that have an old 3 port expansion connector, will definitely need to be checked with a multimeter ....."

Mine is definitely from 2011 so it may actually be the G5 board.

Is it then a matter of changing
Boost targets in the set fields? I've set it how it was described on the firmware updated for march 2012.

You have the G4. G5 came out this year like couple months ago I believe. And what he means is that if you have an older Jb4 harness, you'll need to change and mess with the wires a bit to hook it up with a G5 board.

To answer the OP's question, a G4 is fine for you if youre only gonna do DCI and Tune but I doubt thats all youre all gonna be doing lol so get the G5. I just made the switch to the G5 from a G4 and its more agressive
