I agree with the other poster -- keep your car a few years and trade it in on an '09 in '11.

I already went through two pages worth of these comments before doing the 1st-gen i-drive retrofit on my car. It can be done, and in my case, for cheaper than the option cost on the new car! (Not including the 100 hours of R&D though! - that was just plain fun!)

The CIC retrofit makes it worth it so much more...

I don't have a parts catalog new enough (with the CIC) to know what this part (65829200321) fits... too bad they don't show the underside and what the connector looks like.
The part number doesn't match the one that I posted... and the price is high. This controller should be priced in the low $200's (it is $270 at my dealer without any discounts).

I briefly spoke to one of the Techs at my Bmw dealershio and he said it's possible and that a few people have been looking into it.
Didn't go into details with him but hopefully i'll find the time soon enough to go and have lunch with the guy and try and get more info.
This is by far the number 1 Mod i am dying to do on my car...

A user, I forgot the name, took his e90 without navigation and turned it into a e90 with navigation. If he can do that, this shouldn't be that hard. Maybe we need to contact him for advice. I will try and find the user.

of course its possible. anything is possible cuz the car is man made! But it's the cost that'll be a problem. You can rip out entire console and replace it with the new one if you wanted to, but may be cheaper if you buy the 09 instead

I have a meeting next week with the Master Tech in my local dealership to discuss this retrofit... he's also looking to perform it as several customers already asked for it.

Despite my wife's protests (especially after doing the 1st-gen idrive retrofit), this is one mod that I will definitely be doing. The leap from 1st-gen to the new system is amazing. I wish used parts were more available so that we could easily (and inexpensively) play with this.

Does anyone know the Vehicle Order # that this new CIC option adds to the car?

I'm going to watch this thread - Even if this ends up costing in the 3k range I still think it's worth it!

Folks.........its not going to be cheaper to buy an 09 than to upgrade the nav. Again, I can't find the DIY of the guy who did it but I don't remember him saying the price was outrageous.

The main problem so far is that there are no used parts yet for the new iDrive, so the cost for new parts right now is prohibitive at the dealer.

I think that some remanufactured CIC are showing up in the ETKA which are considerably cheaper than new, though. I estimate some $2000 in the retrofit - with some extra discounts in parts, hardware installation done DIY, assuming that there is already an iDrive installed in the car- could be possible by the end of the year, and some $1200 can be get back from selling the old iDrive parts on ebay, so the effective cost should be less than $1000 if done right.

Add perhaps some $500 if there is no iDrive already installed in the car.

I think anything downwards of 3000$ is relatively worth it.
At least for me...
Because as you mentioned the leap between the old Idrive and the New one is night and day!

Still no OEM support... I think that it will be none, so it will be a matter of doing exactly like Booster4075 did, buy the parts and do the retrofit by ourselves... and see what happens.

I still think that it will be as easy -for those with the current iDrive already installed- as swapping the parts as long as they are exactly programmed already with the exact same audio options in the car... or it will be as difficult of finding a dealer that can change the Vehicle Order to program the components after installation.

WoW! Impressive

I would actually like to see the images on his display, because there were no images that showed it working - just a thought.
