Map update 2009 and newer question(s)

I searched, so if anyone can help me find the answer that would be great.

Dealer is telling me it costs $235 for the map udpate for my nav, plus $200 in labor to install.

Is there a way I can buy this myself, and install myself? I don't mind paying $235, but $400+ dollars is crazy...

Read this thread: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=772078

Short summary:

The 2013 map update on CIC iDrive systems (2009+) is via USB stick rather than the older method of loading the data from DVD. Pre-March 2010 cars which haven't had a system software upgrade can't read NAV update data from a USB stick. These cars apparently need to have their system software upgraded first, then the NAV update can be applied. I may be wrong about the date.

I'm guessing your dealer is pricing together the labor to do the car software upgrade plus the cost of the FSC code to activate the updated NAV data to your car.

Seems there's no way around the software update if it's not already been done for some other reason. Probably will cost you a couple hours dealer labor. There is a cheaper way to get the NAV map update and FSC code. Details in the referenced thread. In theory you should then be good for any future NAV map updates via USB without additional car software updates.

Thank you. My dealer loves me because they backed into my car with an X5 earlier this year. Maybe I wil leverage myself to get a labor discount...

I'd recommend you consider downloading the NAV update via torrent and trying it out. It'll be obvious if the car sees the USB stick or not; if it does you'll get a screen in a couple minutes saying the data on the USB is newer and asks if you want to upgrade, if it doesn't see the stick nothing happens.

If you got lucky and the car sees the USB stick, then buy an FSC code from Sergej and you're good to go.

My problem is: I don't know what the FSC code is. Help

How is Sergej?

Torrent the file sharing site?

OP, read the thread that GPB posted. It's extremely informative and the actual process for updating the maps is easy.

1.) Download the NAV update via torrent - transfer the files onto a thumb drive (your drive must be at least 32gb and be in the FAT32 format). The actual maps files are around 22gb in size I believe. I was lucky enough to find a member in my area who hooked me up with the drive.
2.) Email Sergej regarding the FSC code. You need to enter this code during the beginning of the update in your car. He charges a reasonable price, and is very responsive.
3.) pop in the thumb drive and follow the steps. Took about an hour for me, and for many other members no problem.
4.) Enjoy your new maps, without getting robbed by the dealer.

Yea. It's 8 pages long, and answers are spread all over the pages. Not very helpful...

I have a 2011 328i CV. I worked with Sergej and got the FSC code and downloaded the 2013 Map update from Torret. I am puzzled and need more ideas. The USB is not recognized so it does not get to the part where it asks for a FSC code. It is interesting that I can see the file structure on the USB from the Media CD/DVD view (Like I am going to select a tune to play from an aux device). It appears to have the larger Premuim Screen. Any other ideas?

Which port did you use? It only works in the glovebox port. Also I believe the files should be copied to the root directory on the usb stick.
