Please Help me diagnose leak and squeal! w/pics

Hey guys,

Posted some pictures below, I wanted to know if this is the oil filter house leak, before I pay an indy to do it. (i know the DIY are really simple but I dont have the tools and really dont want to mess anything up, if you're in the GTA and want some extra cash please do PM me!)

Also I get a horrible squeal on startups that I'm guessing comes from my serpentine belt, but in the picture the belt that looks rusted, what is that? does that need to be replaced as well?

Thanks!

Richard

kk thanks, and is there a chance that this could be the oil pan gasket that needs replacing?

Oil pan is on the bottom of the engine. I believe its the oil filter housing gasket.

okay thats good, I'm gonna have to go for a week or so before i can get it fixed though...maybe the oil dripping on the belt is what is causing the squeaking noise?

My educated guess on this is, first and foremost oil filter housing leak and other possible places.
The best thing to do is clean off all this oil hat's gotten everywhere. Just use some engine degreaser, spay some water, drive the car around and you can see where the leak starts from.

As others stated, it looks to be the oil filter housing gasket.

Someone else would have to verify item 4 gasket is the same for non oil cooler housings. I checked 07, and even XI since they don't have an oil cooler and it just turns up this diagram.

Doesn't make any difference it is the same gasket.
You do have to pull the manifold forward to get to the last torx bolt.
Don't let this go much longer because if you get the belt to slip off and move into the crank seal it can ruin your engine by pushing the seal into the engine and also part of the belt.

Here is your DIY with pictures...

please get this changed sooner than later...I think I see coolant there too as I believe the water jacket is involved in all of this....(correct me if Im wrong on that, guys!)

I would say, yes that is why the belts are squealing.

There is a rumor that the deteriorating oil housing gasket can get into the water pump and foul it, though I have not heard direct proof of that. A water pump is 3-500.00 and labor is much more too...and if that housing gasket does blow out on you it will cause more damage. I only say this because it looks pretty wet down there.

can oil get in your coolant and vice versa if this gets bad enough...yes but if you can get it done in the next few days you should be okay....

good luck with it...

Looks like the oil filter housing gasket that's leaking. The sure way to find out is to clean off the oil, drive around for a while and see where the the oil is coming from. Looking at pictures of spilled oil can't really help diagnose the problem.

thanks for the replies everyone, I found a bmw tech that does private repairs in his garage and he said he'd do it, oem part included, for 200 bucks... i know the DIY looks really easy but I dont have the tools or the spare time this weekend and I much rather just get it done asap. Hopefully this fixes the squeal too!
