Heres a DIY for people wanting to fit a new PCV valve:
Remove the cabin filter and cowling and remove the engine cover. This is the same stuff you would remove if you were to change your spark plugs or coils This is the general area we are working in We need to remove the PCV vent hose. If you don't have the correct technique this takes FOREVER. Once you know how it comes off its quite easy. The 2nd time I fitted a RB PCV it only took me a few minutes. Pull on on the hose and maintain force on it (don't let go). Simultaneously start prying once at a time each side of the clip. If you maintain pressure, the side will pop off and not click back into place. Then work your way around. It can be frustrating as the clips can pop back in when you alternate sides Unscrew the stock valve cap, use a 13mm socket. Its a tight fit but you can remove the cap without removing the hard fuel line. Just need to get it at a particular angle. The Stock PCV valve exposed. Get a pair of pliers and rock it back and forth while pulling it out. The stock valve will get chewed up, this is a 1 way trip. Grease up the oring (i used engine oil) on the new PCV valve and put it in the hole. It may require some force to get in. If it does not go in you can just put it in loosely. You can actually use the PCV cap to locate and press the PCV valve in instead. Put the cap in, requires a weird angle to get in. You will find the cap will locate and align the pcv valve and it will effectively press the PCV valve into place if you didn't manage to get it in by hand. You can loosen the cap to verify that the PCV valve has been pressed into the hole. I found the O ring on the new cap was a real bastard, the oring kept getting squished, even after oiling it. Putting a lot more oil on the oring helped a lot and got it in.

Its a valve that vents the oily gas from the crankcase back into the intake. Apparently the stock one is leaky and can let excess gasses into the intake tract, possibly causing more oil buildup and carbon buildup.
The new cap is so you're not stranded if you chew up your stock cap. I've done two cars and the stock caps didn't require much force to remove. Think its more of a money making accessory to be honest. Hard to say if the new valve works better, would need a catch can to measure how much oil accumulation I get.

got it yesterday.
Looks good except the cap isn't silver in colour as in RB web site, thought it would be nice to have some silver colour inside the engine bay. Thanks again naynay for organising. |
