JBD vs UPSOLUTE ECU TUNE?

I am on the fence as to which to purchase? I realize that the JBD is a "piggyback" fuel map, while Upsolute is an actual ECU re-map.

Upsolute is $375.00 at a local dealer.

JBD is around $279.00-$299.00 from what I see.

Looking for more usable power, reliability, and no appreciable loss in MPG; realize this is largely the "right-foot" factor!

All of the 335d threads say fairly good stuff about the JBD, but little is written on Upsolute? I do not feel like paying Renntech $1,200.09, or Velos Designwerks $899.09.

Thanks in advance!

I don't recall anyone on this board getting the Upsolute tune, it's the first I've heard of it. You're right, that's a very good price for a tune. Do you have any details about the tune itself?

First time I've ever heard of this tune too. I'd ask them questions as to what parameters are being changed for this tune to work. Also ask them about the EGT values post tune.

I'd also want to see legitimate proof based on pre/post dynos done on other cars that their tune does what it claims.

What HP/TQ do they promise with this tune?

Thanks JP-76.

That looks like a 27 HP and 37 TQ increase for the car after the tune.

Very modest for sure.

Especially in the tuner world, products tend to be priced in accordance with the product offerror's ego combined with product quality. When I see the price my mind immediately goes to the cost of R&D, startup, and marketing for this sort of thing.

According to a very positive review in the 328 section, it looks like upsolute consists of a knowledgeable father son team in NC who work out of their basement in cooperation with a tuner in Australia. There is nothing wrong with that, but I just wanted to be clear on product expectations. Personally, I'd go JBD until you're ready to go Evolve or RENNtech. It's an awfully expensive drivetrain to try to skrimp on the programming that controls it...just my $.02.

This is the closest to proof that I have; from the Upsolute website. A local guy does it out of his house; gets tune from Austria.

I am leaning towards JBD at this point because:
-Many use it in the 335d with decent reliability and gains.
-It can be removed easily when the ECU needs to be stock. No matter what, the ECU is no longer stock once it has been remapped.
-Price is slightly lower, and product support appears pretty good.

On the other hand, it bothers me that is just a piggyback tune and can smack the car into limp mode while dialing it in.

Thanks for everyones input.

thats the ONLY downside i see w JBD, I almost bought them but since I have used RENNtech for many years I stuck with them and i personally know the owner Harmut Feyhl true our cars are NOT Toyotas or any Japanese car but GERMAN Made therefore, we pay a price for any aftermarket gains, that said, if you want to play with the big boys you have to pay like them unfortunately!!

Friend of mine has had an Upsolute tune on his Mk4 Jetta 1.8T for over a decade now with no ill effects other than increased tire wear.

I have my 335d since only 2 week and i have installed the JBD the first day.
This product is simply amazing and transform the 335D in a sport car !
No code at 100% (except the 1st day, but now the ecu seem to like that !)

Here's a reply I got after enquiring about the tune (a local affiliate of theirs near Toronto):

Hello John,
We currently do not have the hardware to tune your car. If we ever purchase it, we will contact you to see if you might still be interested.

I had Upsolute prog in the early days in my Seat Leon TDI witch had 130 hp standard. After the guy from Upsolute representative had done his magic, we bench id for 192 hp / 450 Nm

So they can make custom software as much as the other guy

Yes, it's Montego Blue and interior is Individual Rust Brown

I'll be posting more pics to " E91 picture thread" when I have time. Interior and exterior.
