So I get a quote from a shop to install downpipes and intercooler, apx 8 hrs ( 6 hrs for dp and 2-3 for fmic) , around $900, is this normal or getting bend over is a nice way of describing it?

Sounds like a steep hourly rate. Plus, 6 hours seems like a long time for a professional DP install.

A local DIY guy here does dp and fmic install in about 3hrs and for less than half of your quoted price. Yea +1 on the ky jelly comment.

Yeah, it was a "rusty steel pipe" only deal.

Did he tell you, you were pretty? haha.
But seriously, that's a steep price for DP's and FMIC. The install for DP's at a shop should be around 2 hours, 3 at max. As for the FMIC, that should be an hour.

That's what I thought 2-3 hrs is normal and that's what I got from another shop, but jeez 6 hrs is just bending over with a ky jelly and this is from a tuning shop.

As a novice with no mechanical skill, I installed DPs in about 3.5 hours the first time. The FMIC took me about 3 hours, only because of HEAVY trimming (135i installing a thick FMIC). THis was all done in a parking lot on rhino ramps. When i needed to re-install, it took much less time.
Get another quote or try it yourself.. I had to install and uninstall these mods several times. I couldn't imagine the cost this would have been. It's up to you, but I actually enjoy installing the mods myself. |

As others have said, that is very high. I paid $150 for Fmic install and $250 for DP install. The former took about 1.5h and the latter 2h. Find another shop.

Hey OP all these prices are subjective so what these members got qoute you might not. It also depends on the part some downpipes dont always fit perfect etc. Some intercoolers might require front bumper removal etc. It took me 50mins to remove my front bumper, stock intercooler and install the new intercooler. And another hour trying to tighten one t clamp on the turbo side.
if youre up to it I would go buy some tools and do it yourself its not hard. The downpipes might be a little space restricted but its pretty simple. The worst that can happen is you may spend a little more time. |

Depends on the shop and how familiar they are with the car. It seems they are charging near book time, which is not entirely unfair on their part, on the other side of the spectrum there are bmw enthusiast shops that are familiar with the car and therefore a bit more competitive with the pricing since they know how long it will really take them. Whereas an unfamiliar shop might want to cover themselves in case it takes a bit longer then expected.
Expect 3-4 hours on average for downpipes, and 1.5-3 on FMIC. Labor rates range anywhere from $75/HR up to $125/HR |

I believe that when a shop sells downpipes and installs them they should have a bulk park how long it takes to install, of course there could be some issues but that's ~1/2-1hr extra, every shop said 2-3 hrs and I hear people with same numbers, 6 hrs is just total bs.
