335d Quaiffe LSD

Hi All,

Can anyone recommend a company other than Birds who will fit an LSD - I simply can't justify spending £1722 to have one fitted, though still would very much like one. I know they give good service etc, but perhaps too rich for my blood!

Yes, unfortunately I have the 'welded version'. I was thinking I would commit around £1200, though on finding out it would be significantly more I think I would rather put the money towards buying an M3.

So anyone (preferably around the Midlands / up North) who fits LSDs? I doubt there is anyone and a search on this forum yielded no results (someone suggested Speed Religion though I've heard no feedback on the product).

I certainly have a need (or strong desire at least) to lauch out of corners quickly following a re-map with Evolve - it will light up traction control in the dry... in fourth!

Many thanks in anticipation.

Jon

Speak to Ant at Speed religion he may well rise to the challenge of an affordable LSD, I was planning on using SR if I ever get around to having mine done and his labour rates will be lower due to not running a large wokshop etc.

I understand that Birds are the sole distributor for the Quaiffe diffs. Anyone else will have to buy it from them anyhow.

They want 260 labour to fit the diff which i suppose is about 3 hrs and isn't too bad IMO?

The problem with the welded crown wheel unit (which I have too) is that the machining time/costs are very high to get the crown wheels off and they have to be sent away for this to be done.

That means diffs for welded models are supplied as exchange units, with a large deposit taken until you return your old diff. This adds 400 quid to the unit cost roughly.

I'm a bit miffed about it, but I'd always planned to get one - by the time I knew about the welded crown issue I'd already bought the damn car!

Noone will beat Birds price, some will match it.

Anyone who beats the price risks not being able to resell them in the future, believe me - I have done plenty of research!

Thanks guys - Birds have obviously invested a lot in R&D to get LSDs out for a large number of cars. The price seems a little prohibitive for a modification which will make little difference to resale (though what mod does)! The feedback on the forum is excellent in terms of the quality of their knowledge and after sales service, which is certainly paramount with a component of this nature.

I have seen one or two postings on the forum 'that there may be reductions available for forum members'. I wonder if a few of us could approach them with a group buy to make it worth their while? Certainly would bring more business their way!

Ask them yourself for discount, they're a business just like any other, times are hard.

A group buy for the LSD from Birds won't happen unfortunately, not least because they are not forum sponsors at the moment. Getting commitment from say 5 people, with deposits etc, for a mod that might possibly cost upwards of £1600 just isn't that successful in reality.

If however you were to do as has been suggested by myself and others, which is to ask Birds directly if you qualify for an E90post discount on the part cost, you might be pleasantly surprised. Might help you somewhat to mention my name too.....

Thanks very much for the offer, I might very well take you up on your offer of dropping your name Tone. I'll need to have a think how much much I would be willing to raid the piggy bank over before I approach them first though!

Love your review, certainly a good selling feature for them (should post your review on their website)!

On a slightly different note, I can barely believe, Porsche are only just offering an LSD option on the Boxster range. Just goes to show what a specialist bit of kit you're getting.

If you're not careful your piggy bank may end up looking a bit like mine:

I spoke with Kevin this afternoon about my Hartge anti-roll bars and APR brakes and asked about a discount which he gladly worked into my quote. Then he took back half of it when I mentioned Tony's name.

BTW, Tony, a round is chambered and the hammer's cocked. Just waiting for availability of parts and researching fitment on 193M wheels. 3/7 isn't possible.
