Photo Snapping Camera in rear bumper...Some ass-clowns don't know how to park!!!

It's funny, I've always wanted to put a camera in the rear where anytime anyone bumps my bumper when parking, it takes a quick photo of the person's license so I can then write a hit and run report if there's damage.

I know some people think this is silly, but living in DC, stupid ass people tend to use the bump technique when parking without any regard for my vehicle and obviously their's as well. These people need to be punched in the ear!!!

ANy ideas?

Good l uck proving that a car you snapped a picture of was the one that caused any damage. It's a good idea, but I don't think you'd win.

I saw they have a guard you can put on the bumpers when you street park. My friend in NYC has it.

Isn't that like telling people it's OK to hit your bumper?

Have you seen the key hole cameras, they make infared ones too and ones built into licence plate frames, used for reverse cams? I guess you could get one of those and hook it up to a video security style video recorded that had like a 12 hour loop or something. Hide everything in the trunk. Than if you did notice damage you would have it to play back. You would have to notice it within 12 hours, also if you left it on for more than a day the battery might lose the charge. I could research it and wire it up to start upon shutting off the car automatically. The hardest part would be finding a video recorder that could run on direct current instead of the usual alternating current. A DC/AC converter would work but those are very ineffecient and would drain the battery much faster. This would be a fun project!

to bad you can't record from a source to a video IPOD, that would be perfect!!!

You might be able to use something like this cell-phone sized Chinese camera on ebay: item # 120146470209 . $70 (+ $30 shipping + $11 1-GB SD memory card) The camera is a little bigger than a cell phone. I guess you'd need one for front and one for back of car!

EDIT: A better solution might be something like 250146052181, or 250147708361, which has motion detect and 2-camera input. It is limited to 8 fps.

Proof would be when the body color of the car on camera matches up with the color on my bumper or when the license plate holes match the holes in my bumper.

I plan on getting a reverse camera in the near future, but would like to have some buddies rigg it where if the ignition is off and it feels a shock/bump the camera would record for about 15 seconds or so....

You should add voice to it: You just bumped my car! You are on video and if you dont leave your insurance information you will be reported to the police.

Ummm...wouldn't the license plate holes be the same no matter what car hit you?

Did it get stolen?

I was thinking of getting this for when I do park on the street. But it seems like people will just hit your bumper for the heck of it.

Umm, unless 2 people hit you in 1 night then possibly, you may not know which car hit you, but that is the extreme side of things. If you get hit and there are holes in your bumper, this program will record for 30 seconds or so and will catch the person who did it on the HD....

I actually spoke to someone who writes his own software for his pc in his car and with a shock sensor much like the ones you see on alarms, this could work wonderfully....

swoop - If you park on the street, this is just how it goes. Everyone in DC parallel parks by feel. This is not unique to DC.

NYC has by far the worst parallel parkers in the world. If you walk down the street and take a look at all the bumpers, almost every car has some kind of bumper damage due to bad parking.
