Wanted: Second Hand SKY Box

Ive decided to go back to Sky having tried Virgin for last year. They are coming to put everything back in and set it all up in a couple of weeks.

Ive paid for multi-room BUT they are only putting a standard Sky box in the bedroom. Ive gone for the full HD package and they will obviously be putting the HD box downstairs in the main room.

The guy told me that i could simply buy a second hand HD Sky box and just connect it upstairs and it will be HD and be able to record etc.

If this is true i just wondered if anyone had a second hand Sky box for sale??

Many thanks

Steve

Do they install the cabling for the multi-room?

I've also got a spare sky box, but not HD.

We've got an LCD TV upstairs, but not too fussed about HD or multi-room, so just run the second sky output (standard on the box) upstairs via a single co-ax and use an infrared eye to control the box downstairs via a second remote.

I need multi-room so we can watch different programs upstairs and downstairs. I'd prefer a HD box ideally and one we can record on - but not entirely sure if thats possible??? Im crap with this sort of blokey stuff!! Prefer to just pay some numpty to do it for me.

The sky hd box is by default a sky+ box too. To be able to get hd on your multiroom you, according to sky, need another hd pack subscription (an additional £10). I've just upgraded my hd box to the 1tb storage - but haven't installed yet to see how the old hd one works in the multiroom - pretty sure it'll just pick up the non-hd channels only...

The same ones who chew their own ears and knuckles drag on the floor - but take your point!! I am clueless with anything techical which is frustrating but as i said it seems easier to just pay people who know how - mind you i often wonder about these so-called Sky "technicians" - 9 times out of 10 theyve just left school and dont know their arse from their elbow!! Anyway - probably wont bother and just stick to a standard box upstairs.

Steve, even if you got a 2nd hand Sky HD box, I am pretty sure you would have to phone Sky and upgrade the viewing card to receive HD programs. I gave my old man our old Sky + box when we upgraded, expecting he would be able to plug it in and record. But he phoned Sky and they wanted £10 quid a month for the Sky + feature.

You could get Freesat HD for a one off cost, but the channels are very limited.

Me too, I ask basic questions that 6 year olds seem to class as obvious. Sign that I am getting old.

The £10 extra you pay for your Multiroom card will be an exact mirror of your subscription; thus, if you have an HD subscription, the £10 for the multiroom card will also cover HD and give you that on your second box.

On that basis, if you have HD in your living room it makes sense to have an HD box in the bedroom (or wherever you're locating it) so you can get best value out of that additional card.

You will need a quad LNB giving you four co-axial inputs, as each box takes two inputs.

As others have said, give sky a call and they will pair the cards to the boxed to ensure all the services work as they should and you receive all the channels that you should.

Nope. £10 multiroom just gives you Sky. To have Sky HD you'll need ANOTHER Sky HD pack sub for ANOTHER £10.

From Sky:
"Sky Multiroom: £10 pm. Provides the same Sky TV channels as your main Sky TV subscription on a box in another room. You must subscribe to Sky TV throughout and an extra box is required for each Multiroom subscription. Each box you have must be connected to the same fixed telephone line at all times. To receive your HD subscription channels in another room, you'll need another Sky+HD box and HD Pack subscription."

I think Will's idea of a freeview HD box sounds good. Depends I suppose on how often you need to watch different channels at the same time. Is that facility worth £120 per year or even £240 per year for HD. Not sure how much the freeview HD box costs but surely you'll be in profit within a year . I think Sky take enough of our hard earned...
